Well I decided to dress up the inside of my main rig today so I picked up some UV reactive molex connectors, a molex removal tool and some of that expandable mesh wire loom.. First off I must say the expandable tubing is way more of a headache then its worth, it frays so bad sometimes you cannot even get it over whatever your wrapping.. So I give the molex plugs a whirl.. Seems like I need to use more force to remove the pins then the instructions would indicate, none the less I ruin one cable end. Thinking it was a fluke, I try it with a different end. Same thing, pins came out, but won't go back in the plastic connector because they're too expaned. So I try a test on a crappy old splitter cable, wouldnt you know it worked flawless, the pins come right out.. Back to my PSU, broke yet another cable end.. I guess some molex pins actually aren't removable.. A very frustrating evening nonetheless..
Well, if it were Molex it would probable have worked, but it probably wasn't Molex. It was some cheap second source. Happened to me too, so I had to get new pins, connector shells and a crimper. - I feel your pain.
first off- unlucky. second off. yes that expandable crap is useless.. unless you`ve got hours to sit around and do it over and over again, and someway of sealing the frays (I used zip ties) its more trouble than its worth, get a psu with it pre-wrapped.
i've only used that expandable stuff once and thats enough to make me hate it....it took me a day to do my modular psu and the i found the heatshrink they sent was useless so i used blck electrical tape and to be honest i think that looks better that the heatshrink would have....anyway unlucky modding attemp scoob8000
Melt the end, like with a lighter or actually cut it with a hot razor bladE? What a pita.. I just got my X-Connect power supply today, it's fricken sweet looking.. I'll post pics when I install it..
Taking the time and doing it right gives fabulous results. It always shows if you don't know what you're doing or don't take your time when sleeving.
As promised, heres the pics of the X-Connect PSU.. I never thought I would say a PSU could be sexy, but this thing is.. My only gripe is the wires are very stiff and there isn't much you can do where they tend to bunch up at the top of the case.. I didn't spend any time trying to tidy up. Now that I know the proper method to use expandable sleeving I'm going to make a project of sleeving the remaining cables and tidying up the rest of the clutter.. FYI in the 3rd from the last pic you can see my first attempt at cable sleeving..
Wrecked molex pins don't have to bee the end of the world. You can buy them seperately - both the male & female ones - and re-solder & crimp new pins to salvage your PSU. I bought a bunch of pins & molex cases in my local electronics store to provide power for my homemade case lighting. It's really easy soldering, too - no fiddly, heat-sensitive electronic bits to worry about!
my god that +12v rail is a bit naff i've got an Antec NeoPower 480W and thats got 32A on the +12V rail
It didn't really cost that much, plus its a major upgrade from the "300" watt supply I was using.. Plus this machine isn't overclocked and doesn't have a balls-to-the-wall video card.
