Well everyone, with the help of some people on this forum, endless browsing and youtube video reviews, I am officially beginning my case modding experience today. How long will it take? Will I still have 10 fingers when it ends? Will my neighbors try to get me kicked out of the neighborhood?

No one knows the answers to these questions. However, about 2 hours in I almost killed myself with the dremel twice. Which isn't too bad given that it took my 20 minutes to figure out how to properly assemble and use it.

If I die by dremel, let this post tell the world I was smart enough to form a complete sentence. Otherwise, just sending an advance thanks for all the help I'm sure I'll be needing.

God I laughed so hard when reading this sentence :hehe:

Question... what plans do you have? Big Tower? HTPC? Tell us ;)

    maRiio,

I'm sure I'm missing a few steps. But browsing some of the guides I used google sketchup to form a BASIC model of what I'm looking for. As an avid Batman fan I'm going to try and make a customized full tower Batman case. I'm going for full tower so that if it turns out well, I can hopefully keep it for a long, long time. Just upgrading the components inside.

I'm working off a Antec 1200. I'm starting with the right side (which comes with the pre-built window. I'm going to remove all the window fittings and cut a larger window. Then, in a piece of aluminum, cut the bat-symbol and put it into the larger hole. This way, the bat-symbol *should* form the window that I can look through to see the inside of the case.

I've got other plans for the left side of the case, front, and top. But this is what I'm on first.

Thanks for the interest!!! I already have one question though, if anyone happens to know the answer. In the places I have cut the sheet of aluminum, it is a little rough. I see people use hand files on steel to smooth it. Should I do the same for the aluminum sheet, or should I use a dremel tool to smooth it out?

That's a nice idea. Never saw a Batman case. But there was a pc modeled into a Batmobile.
The Antec 1200 is surely a good basic tower to start to mod with ;)

But be careful with your dremel mate :) With a little bit of testing at some different sheets of metal you will find out how to use it :)

For smoothing metal a file is the best you can have. Or use the dremel with some smoothing tools. But be careful to take not too much of the material off.

If you want to have a straight line then use a peice of angle when you file, i will keep the file square and straight.
Practice is everything! If you cut a window out of a case use the peice you cut out to try some more complicated cuts, will help a lot.
Alu is a lot easier to work with than seel, but steel is easier to cut with a dremmel.

Good luck and take pics ;)

What kind of dremel do you have? I find mine is very slow at cutting through Aluminium sheets but I think maybe I bought badly, I got the rechargable dremel stylus!
