Does anybody here use Kaspersky Internet Security? And if so, any opinions on the latest build?

We've used KIS at work for ages, but the 2014 release gives me concern that they might be going wrong, for a number of reasons:

    - installer file size is about 250MB (up from 160MB)
    - installation requires (and automatically installs) .NET Framework 4.0
    - installation of program and of updates takes vastly more time than in previous versions and in rival products (in excess of 15 minutes on many Core 2-based machines, versus about 5 minutes for Norton or McAfee)
    - sub-interfaces and menus have been overhauled and reorganised and are much more laborious to navigate (despite a better-looking new Metro-style aesthetic)
    - interface presents less information than 2013 in several places (such as the current download speed when updating)
    - startup loadout is much slower
    - build updates are significantly larger, while Kaspersky's servers don't seem to have sped up much (they still don't max out a 16Mb connection, something many other security providers' servers do with ease)

I'm not railing against Kaspersky (I love Kaspersky and am a bit evangelical about them due to their fantastic detection rates and security design) but 2014 just seems a bit off in software terms, and their download/install speeds don't seem to be keeping up with their software bloat, and I'm worried. Anyone else had their hands on it and want to weigh in?

I've installed it on our home pc's, but ive had trouble on my win 8.1 system, uk version not yet compatible so had to get us version. Trying to find some menus took a while with new layout, but i have noticed virus definition update seem quicker on my mums compared to 2013

We've recently just swapped from Kaspersky to Bitdefender in the shop where I work. We didn't really see the difference in filesize as an issue (we download it once and distribute it internally via a gigabit network). But the other problems you've said and the fact it doesn't work on 8.1 (all our computers are on 8.1 Pro) was a deal breaker.

Since the move to Bitdefender I've noticed a bit more responsiveness and updates are much quicker. Plus detection rates are basically identical :D

What resources are you using for up-to-date information on detection rates, if I may ask? I found a decent benchmarking site a while back but they last updated in 2012. My preferences are based on that, but I'm all too aware that the rankings change every year...

Wow, I really did forget to reply to this lol I use AV-Test. Then base it on overall protection for each tested operating system. I also take into account performance and usability. Pointless having awesome protection if it takes 3 weeks to scan a HDD :hehe:

Ahh, you're a star, thank you. I probably could've found that with some proper googling, but it's one of those "not really vital" areas that I never got around to researching, having settled complacently on Kaspersky for a long time. Food for thought...F-Secure is faring much better than I would've expected.

Yeah F-Secure seems to have some sort of shake up and is now extremely good at detection. The lower performance is what puts me off though. I don't really have time to sift through false positives and things hence my move to Bitdefender which seems to be the best all round.

I've been a KIS user since KIS 2007 and yes the installer file just keeps on growing. I remember it was over 20MB for an installer size. However, it's notoriously difficult for KIS newbies to find their way round and 'Help' wasn't helpful either. Amount of time I had to help explaining about 'Quarantine' and 'Exclusions' to first-time KIS user, frankly I don't blame them. Looks like they have attempted to simplify better which is what they need to do.
