For some strange reason I got bored and created this handy little thing: It allows you to place an image such as "http://www.mookie.org/emailsafe/YmVuQG1vb2tpZS5vcmc=.png" on the forums or a website and have your email address safe from web crawlers searching for email addresses. It should be fairly easy to use and feel free to use it, just don't abuse it. I'm paying for this bandwidth out of my pocket, so if this is overused I may shut it down. We'll see. Anyway, to get started go here and enter in your email address. To Do: Add user accounts for shorter urls (Such as http://emailsafe.mookie.org/username.png) [done] Create a subdomain for this project [done] New: Add ability to have more than one email address per account New: Add swear filter If you see any errors or have any comments please let me know here.
Nice idea. Without wanting to suggest any bad intentions on your part, you should probably put a disclaimer-type thing on the site saying that you won't reveal addresses entered to any third party, it'll just make people feel more secure about giving you their e-mails
If I can make sure there aren't any bugs maybe we can even get RTT to add us a little [emailsafe] tag
hehe. perhaps before he does though, you should put a little "error checking" in, or any fool can just use it to bypass the swear filter. oo look at me, I'm writing without the swear filter censoring it lol But great idea mate. might mean I don't need hundreds of different email accounts in future.
lol, good idea. I'm also going to make it check that it's formatted like an email address to keep any possibility of misuse as low as I can. P.S. Can an admin email me a copy of the list of swearwords the forum filters out so I can make sure to get them all. My email address is
Ok, I just got done with user accounts. It's a little crude at the moment. But it all should work as planned. Tomorrow once I get home (I'm visiting my mother right now) I hope to get it all looking pretty and running a little smoother. I also plan on adding a feature that lets you have more than one email address per account. I'll keep you updated.
what a great idea, i signed up. maybe if the bandwidth usage gets too much you could offer the creative servive but you have to host it yourself...
this is very cool idea mookie, looks loads better then just putting like planki at lockdownsecurity dot co dot uk etc! nice one
I signed up yesterday and think its a really good idea, but do u think it would be an idea to put a link to the picture in the user CP type thing? This is rather than remembering the link all the time.
i like it, i could host some images, maybe if we could make a site forward it to multiple servers so your traffic doesnt get killed.
what about just stopping direct linking, so users have to store the image elsewhere? you could then offer hosting only to members or senior members or something.
That's on my to do list fot the design. Right now it all the code works it just looks ugly. It's gonna be pretty and easier to use when I'm done. That's what I had in mind if it ever gets to the point that it's eating up badwidth. That's also not a bad idea, I might take out the non-member thing all together. We'll see
If I do use this, I will upload my e-mail on my own webspace to keep your bandwidth down. Some suggestions: How about some options to change the font/size/spacing/color? Also, it appears that your images have the text centered in the image, so when they are in-line with real text, the text appears to be like half a line off. Is this a problem that could be solved? I'm thinking something like moving the text down in the image and adding blank space above the text. L J
The ability to change font/size/etc is a good idea. I might have to check on server load though. I think the problem with the alignment of the text is a problem with the way the forums post images. It seems to align the bottom of the image with the botom of the text, so any letters that stick under in the image (p, g, y, etc) will align with the bottom of regular letters in the text (m,s, etc). I'll play around with it a bit though and see what I can figure out.
