I have a second hand xbox360 that seems too overheat and give me the rrod every few months, here's what I've done so far to keep it cool:

    * Cut away mesh and plastic on the back to improve airflow
    * X-clamp fix + replaced the heatsink cpu & gpu thermal paste
    * Replace 9v twin fans with 12v fans.

All this and the box still failed to stay alive more than a week. My final step was to dismantle the whole thing and keep an old computer cpu fan sat over the xbox360 heat sink. This method works just fine at keeping the 360 cool and hasn't failed in over 2 months, however the thing looks terrible, which means I have to keep it hidden away.

Have any of you had any successful attempts at keeping the overheating thing cool?

    Ta!

Mine works fine after I replaced the x-clamps with M5 bolts. I did that over the summer, sold it recently as I wanted a 360 with HDMI.

wouldn't you be better to just leave it stock so that when it does fail you can send it back to MS and get a new one. if you hack it up and it doesn't work you're screwed.

Anything that reduces load temps will help, some methods more than others. As Doug hinted, it's the X-clamps that cause the troubles, so removing them or not giving them chance to mess things up is the way.

It's not a sure-fire situation though, MS have been trying to solve the problem for ages.

Does anyone know if the latest die-shrink to Jasper helped? They've got the power requirements down to 150W now...

Granted leaving it as it is, is the best way given that Microsoft give you a warranty. Mine however was second hand and thus has no warranty :s my only option was to butcher the thing to pieces.

Might see how much laptop coolers are, hopefully they aren't power hungry like the 360.

Every time I think of buying a 360 two thoughts spring to mind.

    1) Most of the best 360 games are either sickeningly overrated or better on PC anyway

    2) Threads like this.

How the hell has it not been sorted yet?

Watercool it. They have kits to do this.

But, you can get a 360 arcade for only $200 now, so either buy a new 360, or watercool it.

I just sent mine in, and less than two weeks later a brand new system was delivered to my door, no expenses.

IMO great service, just a shame that early 360s are rubbish....

    There's no doubt it's a great service, it's just a shame that it's got to exist. :\

I think Microsoft needs to extend their service to the disk drive also. I've had problems with my disk drive on both of my 360s. Same with many other people I know.

What's bad is it's not cheap to send it in and it's not cheap to fix it yourself.

I brought a second hand Arcade version about a year and half ago. and its running fine.

I heard on the grape vine if you register your xbox with mircosoft and it fails they come pick it up and fix it?? or is that hearsay

You have to be the original owner of the Xbox 360 in order to get the 3 year warranty service on the specific hardware failure error code (RROD).

However, if your console hasn't been registered with Microsoft before, I think you might be okay.

What happens if your Xbox 360 receives that error code is you can contact Microsoft, they will send you a pre-paid box to put your console in, and than you request a pickup from FedEx. (or UPS, but I think Microsoft uses FedEx)

The easiest mod so far is fixing the GPU heatsink, just tape a piece of semi-thick paper so the airflow works okay.

2nd mod. Get fence clippers and destroy the mesh covering the fans.

    3rd: Replace fans.

You don't need the X-clamp mod unless really necessary.

You could also just replace the heatsinks with some symmetrical ones.

I'm surprised someone hasn't made a complete aircooling heatsink that you can retrofit into the case itself - there's loads of room in there.

I've heard about people using cookie cooling racks to raise them up a bit and allow cooling under the bottom.
