Seems a little selfish to lay everybody off (less those 15 "lucky" people) just because he's got bored and wants to move on. Couldn't he just have moved in a non-exec role and let someone else run the company for him?

The Bioshock IP will more than likely remain with 2K Games. As Irrational Games was a subsidiary of 2K any IP they owned will usually belong to the parent company. Though saying that, if Ken Levine is going directly to Take-Two then he could potentially reclaim the IP as Take-Two Interactive own 2K Games.
