OK, everything went fine when I went by the old list you had up, kargin. But I went by the readme which says:
    cd linux
    make mrproper
    make xconfig
    make dep
    make bzImage
    make modules
    make modules_install

Then it says to copy linux\arch\i386\bzImage to the location of my bootable kernel (is this my \boot directory? The readme says that if I don't use a boot disk I probably use LILO. I use neither a boot disk nor LILO :( )

I know there was something different in the list Kargin gave before, but don't remember what.

    Thanks in advance.

what do you use to load linux, loadlin? you need to configure your boot loader to use the image you created, by whatever means. If it is lilo, its quite simple to configure, just run:
make bzlilo, and it will take care of copying your old working image to LinuxOLD, and your new one to Linux.

But it all depends on what you use to load linux at startup

With all new kernel versions, once you've typed :

    Just type:

    make install

Handles everything for you. All you have ot do then is open /etc/grub.conf (your still using the correct loader aren't you :p) and make sure the options are how you want them (default option, time out, etc). Then just reboot and select the new kernel and assuming you did everything correctly, you should have a new kernel. When your running xconfig, before you do anything, make sure you open the proper config file (/usr/src/linux-2.4.xx-x/config/kernel-2.4.xx-i686.config usually) or it will just save your options to RAM or Swap, both of which are useless once you reboot ;)

    Cheers mate.

EDIT: Mayhap I'd better put that list back up . . . . I just removed it cuz I learned older kernels don't use it, although I'm not sure when they implemented it, and also it was too specific to the x86 archetecture. . . Hmmm...

EDIT AGAIN: pay no attention to my inability to type or spell today.

    1) I'll get her figured out, and if I don't I'll post back here. I thought I got the settings right in xconfig, but we'll see.

    2) ?

    3) We're thinking something bigger. Something to make us RICH!

Is there a way to see the text that is shown on boot? There was an error with my chipset, but I can't catch exactly what it was... (this is the stuff before "Red Hat 7.3 Press l to enter manual boot" )

    Edit: nm, I found it.

there's still a problem. But I think the official ALi drivers will get it sorted. Going to deal with it later.

    Err.r.. Redhat can't find cvs ?

That's bad, mm'kay. cvs is the core of all existance.

    That's what I'm sitting here thinking. WhatdoIdo!?WhatdoIdo!?WhatdoIdo!?

Why is it that when I do something, it can go just fine the first three thousand times, but then when I think things are going right, it goes wrong?
/me proceedes to beat pc more.

Edit: got that much. Now I need to find the xlib and xfree86 devel stuff :(
/me kicks self for not installing it in the first place.
