According to this article from The Register, since I'm a developer, I prefer Heavy Metal - and they are right! The latest research by "accelerated learning" outfit The Training Company may be very silly, but at least it doesn't accuse piratical punters from downloading movies illegally from the Internet. Nope, the Training Company has uncovered some much more exciting facts regarding the musical preferences of those working in the wonderful world of computing. The company "took advantage of a captive audience of IT professionals to poll them on the contents of their portable music players". Shockingly, the results of its poll among 200 students at the Training Company's UK residential courses reveal that developers are malodorous headbangers playing air guitar to Megadeth, Microsoft Certified professionals get their rocks off to Britney while IT directors can be found sipping the finest wines while Mozart tinkles away in the background. No stereotype-fulfilling findings there, then. Some of the results: Job: Microsoft-certified professionals Favoured genre: Mainstream pop Top three bands: 1. Britney Spears 2. Dido 3. Beyonce Job: Developers Favoured genre: Heavy Metal 1. Megadeth 2. Iron Maiden 3. Slipknot I'm a developer and I prefer metal, so in my case this list is true - I'm curious to see if this rings true for the Bit crew.
I'm also a developer and I prefer bluegrass music. So what does that mean? My second favorite is punk which I suppose is closer to heavy metal so maybe by a stretch they are correct. I did listen to a LOT of heavy metal in high school. However...since most bluegrass and punk and heavy metal is quite peppy and fast paced music maybe that has something to do with it? Oh...and isn't Slipknot more like mainstream than heavy metal? Goofy looking ba*****s! Turn down the freaking amps and learn how to actually play an instrument.
Bluegrass? My neighbor is HUGE into bluegrass and is in a pretty well known band - well, at least in the northeast (don't ask me the name, I can't remember - I'll ask). Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving he hosts a "jam fest" at his house where a TON of bigger names come and jam the whole day. I'm not really into that kind of music, but it is real interesting to watch these guys jam and they are all damn good. The only name that I can remember is Disk Smith.
I've played banjo since I was 8 although in high school I stopped because it wasn't cool. Now I'm trying to relearn it all. Dick Smith was pretty big in the 70's. Real good banjo picker. My father in law was in a band here and I played with them a bit. Played with a few bigger named pickers at jam sessions and such....like Vasser Clements. But that's not the topic here...sorry. I'll let you get back to the topic. hehe
I assume by developers they mean software developers in which case that would be me. Funny too because I like and have always liked heavy metal, Metallica and Guns n' Roses mainly. But then I also like a load of other stuff too like Muse, Nirvana, The Doors, Hendrix, Radiohead, The Orb and other electro stuff and Pink Floyd. So that would put me in every category except for Microsoft-certified professionals, CIO/IT director and maybe Database Administrators. Which is a good thing really as I don't intend to be any of them.
