I'm looking for a cheapish (£60) KVM switch for 2 machines with leads if possible, any ideas? P.S why does pc world take fecking so long to answer the phone then only to have some dimwit that knows feck all to answer?
Tak a look on the auctions - I picked up a 4 port KVM (Belkin Omni port) for £80+P&P with all cables...
kvmswitch.co.uk or something like that. M8 from OCS forums picked up a 4 port USB one for £100 inc cables. I bought my 2 port KVM 2nd hand off the forums for £38 inc cables
I use a Belkin SOHO 4-port USB model (the top spec belkin one), because I needed one that could run my 21" monitor without any effect on image quality. Got it for £120 with 4 sets of cables. Unfortunately, the USB feature is pretty useless as far as I'm concerned, because you can't attach USB keyboard/mouse to it...it can translate PS/2 keyb and mouse to USB for the machine, but won't connect USB directly (shame....). They're not overpriced, because switching a video signal is not as simple as a physical switch. You have to use high-grade transistors to do it, and that costs a lot of money.
Other than the USB issue, how is the video quality? Thats been one of the reasons I've hesitated. I still think they are overpriced. They are geared more towards business use which almost everything is overpriced for, simply because they can. If not overpriced, then more than I think it is worth/can afford/willing to spend.
there was a good review of a belkin one at vh...worth checking out...and it looked pretty funky too....
The video quality is excellent. There is no visible degradation on my 21" Sony at 1600x1200 @ 85....what it does do is show up quite how bad the image quality on the GF2MX in one of my machines really is compared to the GF3 (this is in 2d).
Belkin KVM. Hahaha... I just purchased a belkin KVM 4 PORT today and I'm edge'n to try it. I must say it is indeed very expensive but a must have, your best bet is seeking EBAY.
I work there, and we do it just to pi$$ you guys off. The longer u wait, the more angry u get, the better u will sound on speakerphone, the more we can laugh at u. Muhahaha! They just put receptionist on the phones and they dont have direct access to stock info. Marz - your resident PC World Serviceman!
My image quality is pretty decent - only quim is that it doesnt detect my hansol moniter 50% of the time and goes to a defualt moniter which makes it slightly flickery
Re: Re: KVM switch Yeah I know I used to work there during my uni days, the receptionist knew feck all, and the business centre takes the calls and they are not a lot better. I was just thinking out aloud when I wrote the question.
hey herbs, if you are still looking for the KVM switch Maplin have got one half price as of sunday. It is a two way KVM with all the wires for £49.99. I tried it and it is quite good (i'm getting one), quite high resolution (1920x1140) and is really small. The code is A64AF. Here is a site with more details than the Maplin website.
Thanks I think I will get one, soz do you mean it will be @ that price on the 16/6/02 or it will finish on that day. looks like a bargin.
Well I brought one and thought what a pos by the looks of it, but set it up and I am pleased with it. No ghosting but im only on a 15" monitor and it has cut down on my cabling Cheers on the heads up on it Fly.
Not so far the cables may be hard to get if they go but otherwise well worth £50, good knows where they got the orignal price of £100.
