God I am so stoked.. I stumbled across http://scummvm.org/ and was able to dig up my old LOOM disks(the box just gets me excited) and have dove right into that game again.. With a new VGA patch mind you so it looks amazing and the Speech CD upgrade. It's a shame the adventure Genre just kind of Died off, those old Kings Quest games were phenomenal.
I loved the broken sword series most. Point n click games seriously need to make a big comeback. hopefully on ds!
just noticed this thread -- i love loom so much, it's one of my favorite games. just a shame it's too short and too easy
It's just a shame the two planned sequels were never made. Though at least you can now download the audio tapes that came with the original limited edition version as MP3s. They are pretty good and properly explore the backstory of the world.
Broken Sword began to lose the plot in 3, and totally lost it in 4. Shame really, they could have evolved the relationship between George and Nicole.
I would rather see an innovative step forward in the adventure genre. Point and click is very cool, but so much more can be done with the technology we have today. I really enjoyed Dreamfall even if it wasn't perfect, I liked how they tried to do something different with the genre.
I've been playing through The Longest Journey lately and I have to say I don't see what the fuss is all about. I'm trying as hard as I can to get into the story and while it is pretty good it's not mindblowing yet (act 3 so far). The main problem is the puzzles - some of them make no real sense and don't have any real clues or logic to them. How the hell am I supposed to know that to get the policemans fake eyeball I need to go back to retrieve Constable Guybrush, rip out his eye ball and then swap them over with the lights off ONLY when the cop sneezes? I assumed that Constable Guybrush only had the one function and was considered abandoned after his first puzzle what with me having ZERO reason to go massively out of my way to reach that area again.
I think it was mostly that a decent adventure game haden't been made for a long time when it was released, so it was kind of a relief that someone had. It's not perfect by any means but enjoyable none the less.
Adventure games ared a tricky one, the reason they were so popular ack in the day was because they were the games that offered the most immersive gameplay experiance - they had store, stuff to do, comedy etc. Now all your good games have these qualities its harder to make people pick the slow moving alternate to the fast paced shooting game. Adventure games have to be very well done these days to get any real recognition
