OMG I can't believe this problem is still with 2 years after it started happening.

Basically I'm getting really inconsistent online play, in Battlefield I keep getting the error message "Connection Problem with server" and the ping shoots up from a stable 78 (Hong Kong on a Korean Server, quite a good ping) to 700 for about 4 seconds and it does this just about every minute and the longer I play the worse it becomes.

I thought it was a hardware problem since I tried to fix everything software and diid just about everything and it was still there so I thoug it was the broadband modem. The tech guy comes and replaces it for free and now there is still a bloody problem.

In CS 1.6 I used to get problems with a lot of choke and a bit less of loss, strangely ping was very normal in fact it was 20 and when I tried to explain to poeple on servers they said I was ********ing. Well I mean I had 20 ping how can I have "lag". ?

So the problem is WTF is it. If anyone can help me out here i'll give them a ton of e-cookies or whatever they want. Thanks

It might be helpful to tell us what hardware you have changed (including the computer hardware and nic and network hardware).

It could be because you have a poor telephone exchange (I'm assuming you are using some form of DSL?) or perhaps your ISP has laggy servers. Is Hong Kong strictly part of China and comes under Chinese internet rules? Because IIRC internet traffic goes through government servers before going outside the country? Which would cause lag.

But if you are having trouble connecting to local servers it is probably you or your ISP.

I agree, it is most likely to do with the way you have things set up.

What values do you have rate, cl_cmdrate, and cl_updaterate set to in CS? No matter what your ping, if you have dodgy values here then you are going to get packet loss/choke.
