Have a look in Task Manager and see what process is causing the CPU usage to spike. Or try a search-everywhere Windows Defender and Antivirus scan.

Can you open the resource manager and look there?

I use this guide myself, but I don't think it's a misbehaving service (unless you're running 3rd party ones like AV or something, those can cause memory leaks.

Remove any uneccesary hardware? I had a similar problem with XP a few years back which turned out to be a dodgy firewire card.

I don't know if it specifically addresses problem such as you're having... but you might find this Tweaking Windows Vista article useful anyway?

removed all unnecessary hardware (was only a stupid front firewire connector, need my dual gpus) and no change :-(

went through the vista tweak guide with no results, but less ram usage :p

scanned my entire harddrive with ad-aware, avg, symantec, and no results

watched my task manager as it was happening, System idle process was still the most cpu usage..

    any other suggestions? plz help!

Have a check in the Reliablility and Performance monitor. See if anything else is spiking, like the HDD or RAM usage.

I found last night for some reason Steam was causing massive spikes in usage, so set the priority of it in task manager to lowest, which seemed to do the trick.
