Hey guys, I'm new to the forum.
I've been playing with computers my whole life and feel comfortable doing just about anything on them. However, I'm stumped with a current situation on my laptop.

I have a HP Pavilion DV4 laptop running Windows Vista 64 bit.

A little while ago my charge port had issues and the plugged in/charging lights wouldn't come on. The battery drained shortly there after and rendered the laptop unusable. With family that has the same laptop I was able to charge the battery.

I took the laptop apart and removed/repaired the charging port to the laptop including re-soldering the connections. Battery/AC adapter lights came on but it showed "PLUGGED IN, NOT CHARGING". By removing the ACPI battery control and reinstalling it I now have "PLUGGED IN, CHARGING". I thought this had fixed and resolved my issues, but the battery continues to die while in use.

If I remove the battery from the laptop I am unable to start up the computer.

With battery removed the AC power lights do not come on.

With battery installed AC adapter lights come and and "plugged in, charging" shows.

Battery does not charge when plugged in and laptop off.

If anybody has any other ideas, I'd love to hear some suggestions on what to do and hopefully possible fixes. There are no other problems with the laptop.

    TIA.

    -John

You could try the battery from the other laptop in yours to find out whether its the battery that's at fault or something else. If it doesn't work with the new battery try the different charger and your old battery. Just try all combinations until you find out if its the charger, battery or laptop that's at fault.
Once you know where the problem is you can look at fixing/replacing the bad bit.

I have swapped batteries. No problem with either battery.

I have swapped chargers. No problem with either charger.

I can't get the laptop to run off AC power only....only runs if there is a battery installed that has a charge.

ok... problem with the laptop then. Flashing the BIOS is worth a try, although i have doubts it will do anything.

other than that... lets hope someone else has a bright idea :)

One of my friends had a similar issue with her laptop. The laptop would NOT run without the battery installed. It finally died and she talked with the manufacture about it, I believe she had to get the motherboard replaced.

yes its the charging circuit within the mainboard, has failed, nothing you can do but have the mainboard replaced, it is usually more expensive than buying a new machine though, but it is worth talking to the manufacturer, as it will be cheaper than trying to get a replacement yourself.

Pretty sure its the motherboard huh?

What I don't understand is why would all the charging lights come on as if it was working if the charging circuit is damaged?

its just the way things are wired, it could be something simple, like a blown fuse on the motherboard, but it requires someone with knowledge of testing, removing and resoldering surface mount technology, thats when things become expensive, and its more economical to replace the board or machine.
