I was just wondering if makeing your own laptop is possible. and im talking about one that can handle Games like Ever Quest and Star Wars Galaxies with out major lag and that can handle the graphics settings.
the closest thing that you could probably do is use a Micro ATX board and mount it in the smallest breifcase possable with a LCD in there lol.
Yeah..making a laptop would probably be possible, but I bet it's incredibly difficult. I haven't personally seen any made-from-scratch lappies around..
i could build my own laptop if i wanted, it would just be as simple as say for a toshiba: #1 find the parts list #2 order all the parts (to which there is around 100) #3 build it
Asus makes a laptop barebone: http://www.kingstoncomputerplanet.com/products/?cid=16&scid=02&pid=160200007
I was looking at a site about this a couple of days ago, but can I find the link? It was (IIRC) a step-by-step guide to building your own laptop... I think they used an Asus barebone (or "whitebox" or something similar - look, I have the memory of one of those... y'know... things... forgetful dealies..) laptop, which included your mobo, then you just got everything else sorted. Sounded fun, and apparently it was cheaper than buying pre-built.
Er just buy one? Alienware Gaming lappys are sweet looking, and will be cheaper and better than anything you can make yourself
Being able to build your own laptop would be awesome. It is pretty impractical tho, atleast if you want to start from scratch. All the motherboards are in weird twisted shapes and stuff fits onto them diffrent for almost every laptop i have looked at. If you where able to build one from like an ATX-laptop form board someday i think you would have to sacrifice alot of the portability (thats a word now).
buying a laptop is good in all, but whats the fun of just opening something from a store? making one would be completly origonal and you can have some prid when you say "i made my laptop" insted of "i got my laptop from Alienware "
well if you make your own laptop you are 1337 and we will all bow down to you seems like a really hard thing to do, and you have to cram stuff in a really small space... too hard for me. but if you got the time, patience and whatever, have fun go nuts... Personally i wouldnt do it IBM T40 series are great...T42p...yum...
People who say building laptops are hard.. haven't built one before. It's about the same as a desktop, with less screwing. Stick in cpu, memory, minipcis, hard drive, cdrw+dvd or whatever, battery, close. Done. Here is a link to a (out of many) barebones; http://64.227.236.145/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RT&Product_Code=CL-56 Still wondering if it is worth it? Here is a list of who "makes/offers" this laptop: PowerPro M 5:6 GamePC GPN-CEN4 Voodoo PC Envy m:360 iBUYPOWER Battalion 101 CL-Series Falcon Northwest FragBook TL Mwave CL56 Save money? Oh yeah. I bolded Voodoo because their base price on that laptop is 3,000 USD, if you want it loaded, closer to 4,550 USD. Don't let laptops scare you, they are just smaller computers. Enjoy.
Forgot to mention the specs on that laptop: Screen: 15" SXGA+ (1400x1050) Dimensions: 333mm (13.11") x 276mm (10.87") x 31mm (1.22") Weight: 2.8 kg (6.17 lb) Video: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB Estimated Battery Life: 4 to 5 Hours
Alienware just re-sell some chassis for a stupidly high price. www.ajp.co.uk often sell the SAME chassis for a few hundred pounds less (hell they had the m10 before alienware did!) but then alienware are kinda erm, whats the right word, rip off. http://www.clevo.com.tw/ are the base one they both use.
They aren't rip offs, because AW has REALLY good support, warranty, and private forums that other AW family users can help each other out on. If you don't own a AW, you don't know the expierence. I am getting ready to get another laptop, and I was going to get a AW:Sentia, until they changed it for the 12" version. Now I will go with something else.. You can build a laptop for cheaper, but you are your own support group. If it breaks, your problem. In the world of laptops, sometimes paying more for it pays off in the end, esp. when it comes to dead pixel warranties. So if you are looking at getting an AW, go for it, worth it. (Laptop only however..)
It would be hard to make a good looking case for a laptop without something like rapid prototyping stuff, Or at least a CNC and some billet ABS.
