any alternative to the stock cooling piece of crap pipe in a M1530? GPU is hitting 80 still, mom just modded her HSF fan (good thing warranty is already void :p) and the cpu dropped to 60 on load, gpu went from 90 to low 80s..

If you have the Dell M1530 with the Nvidia GPU, then there is a recall. Someone else on this forum was able to fix his system out of warranty for free by calling Dell.
    You should look into it.

These things don't really work. not only the problem would be diminished ONLY at home.. I mean come on you will not carry this thing, but air is just adding to the fan, IF it's located close to it.
This however would be ideal for laptop that has a metal base and uses that, in conjunction with the internal heatsink... as well a heatsink. Like on the Dell Latitude E series system with the Nvidia graphic solution. That is why I am able to overclock the GPU at high speeds (still without using any of the above mentioned product).

If you wonder about my overclock, the GPU is a Quadro NVS 160M on the Dell Latitude E6400
    - Core clock: 580 MHz
    - Memory clock: 400 MHz
    - Shader clock: 1450 MHz

    Overclocked to:
    - Core clock: 890 MHz
    - Memory clock: 538 MHz
    - Shader clock: 1850 MHz
So it's like if I took a Geforce 9300M OC model (which doesn't exists but is a little faster than the 9300M) and overclocked it to a 9400M-9500M depending on the game you play.

You can also see if Nvidia PowerMizer is enabled. That feature allows the video card to downclock when "idle", and gives you power when you need it.
Technically Nvidia PowerMizer should be enabled by default, but you never know.

To check and change that setting checkout my tool: Nv GPU Pro
