I got 3 monitors on my desktop so i don't need the laptop anymore and so gave it to my GF. But its handy to have more then one as a backup for if one goes wornge, also another tool so you can have all your none essental stuff on the other machine like, movies, music, chat, etc.. and then be working on your main machine for like work or college stuff.

Laptops are very handy for taking notes during college/uni or essental business tool as with a laptop you can explain things easier plus can show slideshows etc..

Having both a laptop and desktop is quite useful. I can take my laptop with me to class, the library, coffee shop and where ever. When I want a larger screen and better performance I have my desktop. I use both on a routine basis and it makes life easier having both.

hey, what are you using for your fileserver?

I couldn't do the "just laptop" thing. For one thing I couldn't get one that's as powerful as I'd like at a size I would like. I am petite and not too strong, so I like my laptop to be on the small side for portability. My windows desktop is on all the time. I do lots of media, video and audio encoding on my windows desktop, and I really love my 20" widescreen display. I also remote into it from my desktop from my laptop fairly regularly. I've also got a box running Kubuntu linux, and I'm looking to move the many hard drives in my windows box to some sort of NAS box, and I'd like to add a little mac to the mix sometime soon.

    Server 2003, 8 x 250GB Samsung Spinpoints (no RAID), Socket A Athlon XP 2000, 1GB DDR - if that's what you meant?!?

You could opt for XP if you're going to have less than 10 connections to your NAS, or Server 2003 if you're going to need more - otherwise it's a choice of Linux distro, FreeNAS for example.

Yes, that is what I meant, thanks. I'd normally go with something like FreeNAS, but my main problem is that I have drives formatted in NTFS with stuff already on them that I want to keep, so I'm trying to figure out what options will allow that. I do run Server 2003 at work now, so I know how to use it, but obviously XP would be cheaper if I needed to use Windows.

I use my macbook for when i dont want to sit at a desk (it is always nice to work in the back yard when its nice weather) and when im not at home or travelling.

The desktop is much more powerful and does my workhorse tasks which arent suitable for a small screen or slower cpu.

Pretty much the same as most people on here.

No offence meant, but FreeNAS isn't Linux as it is based on FreeBSD which isn't Linux either :eyebrow:

Ditto. I don't see the point in these massive laptops. A laptop is portable, hence why I have a small, light laptop for travelling and I have a desktop for everything else.

I have a laptop which as we speak is falling apart, and generally used to be used to do college work, but it's now more of a coding machine (where I do my web coding), a remote to access my files off my tower (when it works... doh!)

My tower (erm... yeah, the bust one) is used basically as a data store for mp3's etc,

But yeah, now I've had a couple of laptop's, and obviously tower's, I can't see me using just the one - my lappy's aren't powerful enough to do what my tower does, and my tower has the obvious portability issues which means I can't go where I want and do what I want on the tower.

    Just my £0.02.

I have an Shuttle w/ X2 4800+ & 2GB RAM for working on in the office and a ThinkPad X60s for on the move. At home I've also got a gaming rig too, but most of the time I just use my laptop in the living room for general browsing.

I've got my desktop and my laptop, don't use my laptop unless something goes horribly wrong with my desktop. My laptop isn't exactly a fast machine, P4 2.8, 512 ram, 60 gig hdd, but it's handy if I need it.

Behemoth, it's faster than my lappy, and, apart from the HDD space, it's better spec'd than my busted tower!

Main Rig - big, heavy, power hungry. only gets switched on when im gaming, photoshopping, or doing anything that needs either a bit of power or would benefit from big screens

low power box - always on, low power P3, syergy'd to the main keyboard/mouse, on a second input on one of the screens, runs stuff like utorrent, skype, msn etc, though soon I'll throw this stuff on the media server and get rid of this system.

Media server - always on, relatively low power (as low power as >2TB of storage can be), serves media, hence the name

HTPC - currently used exclusively for mce in the lounge, either recorded telly or stuff dragged off the media server, always on (extremely low power, all mobile parts and passive cooling). I suppose it could be used for msn or browsing on the telly, but I would normally just fire up the main laptop

main laptop - 15.4" widescreen, mostly used for web browsing or taken on the go when i have things to do. (reasonably light, 6lbs, but nowhere near as portable as the 12")

little laptop - 12", taken on the go when i dont necessarily have a lot to do but could do with having a lappy around, for instance on holiday (somewhere to dump photos, check emails etc)

cant see needing anything else until I move house, at which point a beefy HTPC will go in a cinema and a less beefy one in the lounge (that was the wife's idea surprisingly enough!)

would like to get something a little smaller than the 12" as well, maybe a 10" uber-portable (a sony x505 in particular), but for the amount it would get used it would be a bit pricey

Main - Used for photoshop / surfing media etc Soon to become htpc once I move.

12" Laptop - primary laptop, very lightweight. Perfect for surfing in the garden etc. Used for stuff that doesn't require a huge amount of power or screen space.

15.4" Laptop - secondardy laptop. Used for working on the move.

    14" Laptop - Spare machine.

I just got my first mobile lappy(as in battery lasts about 5 hours) about 3 weeks ago and have been using it more than my desktop even tho its a p3 1ghz with 512 ram, i got a 160 giger and have all my music and movies on it and its awsome.

    lappy | desktop
    1ghz p3 | 2.8ghz 3800+
    Gf2 | 8800gts
    512 pc 133 | 2gig pc 3500
    160gb | x2 250gb hds

so you see they really dont compair but for im and web and school work its awsome.

I have a tower with 20" and proper sound for when i actually need to work/play and a 12" slaptop for when i need to work on a train or in a library. Works well for me although i desperately need a new laptop battery. 50min is positively crap

I used to have different computers aswell. But for the last year or so, I've only been using my 12" Powerbook. I've actually sold my PC last year.

It's extremely portable, cute and light. The battery will last for hours, thanks to the tiny screen. When I'm at home, I connect it to a 20" widescreen, keyboard, mouse and 1TB external storage though.

Since my Powerbook is getting a bit older, I've been looking for a new/additional mac. Not sure what to get though.. Laptop or Desktop.. reclacement or addition. (See my thread in Apple subforum).
