Hi whats the best laptop I can get for 500 english pounds? Needs to be a good all round laptop for school maybe able to play a few older games. Thanks
The Dell Vostros get you a lot for your money http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/4x_vostro_1400?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd For that kind of money, none of the Zeptos come close, neither do the pcspecialist computers edit: lol, bumbage.
that Dell is alot of power for your cash. may i note, go for the most basic options, like minium amount of ram, ram can be picked up alot cheaper than dell sell it for in the upgrade options. HDD can also be picked up, but i would grab an decent 2.5in external HDD as i find it easier for backing up. You never know when someone will accidently drop your lappy or spill something on it. i had i near miss with a bottle of beer a few nights ago, girlfriend brings me a beer, opens it just before handing it to me, then it explodes i got lucky as the carpet got soaked instead of the lappy and there were more beers in the fridge! lesson learn't, always get your girlfriend to open the beer over the sink, then bring it over...lol! such a good life...
Problem with upgrading the RAM yourself is that a) you get left with a couple of sticks that are surplus to requirements and b) one stick is sometimes somewhere really inaccessible. That said, it does make financial sense. edit: lol about the beer
ram is never difficult to get to, and spare memory can be sold on a forum or ebay. dell is over priced on memory!
I don't think so - I know about 3 people who have them, and they aren't a business. Even if they do want you to be one, just make one up. We do that all the time at home so we can get creosote. I can only get to one stick on my Acer laptop, which is why I was raising the point. I also have little experience with the Dell RAM. And though you say it is overpriced, One of my friends with a Vostro found it was actually cheaper with 3GB than 2; however that was probably a weird one off.
The ram on Dell Vostro's - there's one slot on the underneath, accessible by unscrewing a removable plastic cover. The other is a little trickier - open the screen all the way out, so the laptop is flat, then place something in the notch (edit: the notch is below the screen hinge on the right-hand side) to lever a piece of plastic up, lift it out, then unscrew 3 screws holding the keyboard in. Lift the keyboard out of the way and the second ram slot is hidden under a removable black plastic part near where the keyboard ribbon cable is. Vostro Cheesecake.

Aye, nowhere near. It's a pity the Vostro 1500's aren't freely available to home customers, as I'm sure it'd sell like hotcakes and it would have the added benefit of pushing up the 'has at least this' spec of everyday laptops. There really is, for the price, nothing that comes anywhere near the Vostro. Even Dell's Inspiron 1520, which were the retail equivalent, are no longer available with an 8600M GT.
There was really nothing to it though Bindi'. Two of 'em were courtesy of email newsletters (which I save into respective categories), and the third (Scan's) I had saved to a 'Laptops' text doc, 'coz I've been looking at it meself
