Any way to extend this? I was thinking a Laptop Ide > Desktop IDE on the MB to a Desktop IDE cable to another converter to a dvd drive... I need to extend my drive a bit from the MB.. any tips?
Sorry, you want to use a desktop 3.5" hard drive with your laptop? Or a desktop DVD drive? Do you mean Laptop IDE < Desktop IDE? And do you mean IDE or SATA? How far do you need to extend your drive from your MB?
Might work the way you want it to, but I think a 44-pin to 40-pin convertor (desktop to notebook) has to have 12 volts. The one I've got does as it has a 4-pin molex connector. What you're after is sort of one of these only longer, ideally. Might need some hunting round.
Well, tbh if you're offended by that then a fair amount of the internet just isn't going to be your cup of tea.
It'd be nice to think that people can post on bit-tech without being called a noob by someone who couldn't be bothered even articulating their post properly, especially when the OP is asking for help and the 'noob' is clearly responding with the intention of helping. null_x86: grow up and learn to explain your questions better if you want help.
TBH I've been on this internet thing (and BBSs before) for 25 years now. The guy asks a question, words it extremely poorly. Nobody bothered to answer at all, probably because they couldn't understand what the heck he was saying. I asked nicely for clarification, and instead of answering, he calls me a noob. I'm a nice guy, but there's no reason to help this guy if he's going to be a jerk.
Well, tbh (and this applies to the op too) you don't get respect, you earn it. Willy waving gets you nowhere. I'd rather try and decipher what modders are after (particularly when they come to bit-tech, one of the internet's homes of modding) and try to offer help rather than get on my soap box and lament how poor they are at constructing readable posts. English might not be their first language after all (as is in many cases on here). Just shrug it off.
Your post was, i'm sorry, awfully constructed. It didn't make much sense. And the poor person; like people have said was just trying to help. Apology or get out
My turn again to arbitrate. First we were all noobs at one time. I've been doing computers since before PCs - core memories and punch cards. Second - not all of us are able to articulate our problems in precise engineering terms. " I need a thing to do this, can you help?" type questions need a patient person to ask the OP some questions to define the problem more clearly. Thirdly - BT has members from every continent except Antarctica! Not all of us speak English or British. What sounds strange in normal discussions often get REALLY distorted by using Google or some other translation program. I can't even figure out what some of the British foods are! Try to accept each quest as a legitimate ask for help. If you don't understand don't flame and name call ask questions to help the poster. john
Bit-tech is one of those safe-havens on the net where we can interact without people acting rudely behind their anonymity-shield - I for one would like to maintain that. It's very safe to assume that people on bit-tech will jump at the chance to help someone with a request, especially in the name of modding, but there's no need for ignorance and rudeness from anyone, not least from the person asking for help. Worse, the OP's response, aside from being needlessly rude, didn't even enlighten anyone on whatever the hell he's trying to do.
Ignoring the etiquette discussion above, let me see what situation you are trying to address. On the surface, it sounds like you want to take a slimline PATA optical drive and relocate it with a cable. I have not seen an extension(male to female) with the correct connectors, but I have seen a jumper (male to male) cable from an old 1U server. I think I may have scrounged it, but I will need to get to the cables I put into storage to see. It might be useful for tracking down an extension. The problem here is connecting something to the mainboard. There are 50 pin laptop to 44 or 40 pin ribbon cable adapters out there (with the 40 pin more common by far), but they connect to the drive, and won't work for the mainboard. Assuming you could find one that did connect to the mainboard, then you could use a standard ribbon cable. 44 pin would be preferable as you could use the mainboard's power that it would normally provide to the drive. But with an external power adaptor, you could use the easier to find 40 pin IDE cable. But like I said, this all is useless unless you can connect to the mainboard. Hopefully someone sees this thread and knows of such a thing. edit: The connecto name appears to be "JAE 50" and searches fro anJAE extension keep bringing me here: http://paul.thejennis.com/JAE50/Order_Page.html I'll still check my stuff to see if I can get any other useful info.
OK, I'm not sure which cale you are after, the jumper, or extension. To be very clear, this is what I pulled from the server that was being scrapped: The cable is ~24 inches. As you can see, it won't connect to a laptop mainboard, but cables liek this appear to be used in various rackmount servers. I honestly can't remember what I pulled this above cable from, we were scrapping a bunch of old equipment and I grabbed this as it could prove useful later. It looks like HP part number 17-05140-01 is similar, and there are Dell part numbers as well (but I have not tracked those down). However, from your signature and laptop modding project, it looks like you want an extension cable. The link I posted looks like it is the only source unless you want to roll your own. The site states the extensions are 12" long.
It is not "null" who is odd to me (yeah, rude poeple exist, we know that), but those who hold their side (giving the lessons to Dozer42 ???) and even (after their offenses) are patiently helping them to solve their problems. What's going on here? Acting like that YOU are actually offending Dozer42 (and not just him). You know, if internet hooligans are welcome here, then people who really trying to help aren't. You cannot have the both. edit: and please don't talk about english language. every human being (and software translator) knows what "noob, read the question..." means.
