Don't know if this qualifies as small form factor...but it's a laptop so it should do...anyway the problem. I've got an old Tiny laptop (really bad; about 32MB RAM) and there's something wrong with the internal part of the power supply. Have had the external "brick" replaced but it doesn't make a difference and a guy selling laptops who seemed to know what he was talking about said it was a loose connection between the pin which attaches to the external lead and the circuit board inside the laptop. Have taken the laptop apart and the power module is tiny! for people living in england, it's a cube with each side the size of a penny, a couple of centimetres. And this guy said there would be some soldering involved in fixing it and it would cost abou £120 to get it done professionally. Bit over my budget, so I thought that I could attempt this myself seeing as the laptop's pretty useless anyway or I could find out whether all laptop power supplies (the internal bits anyway) are the same and maybe replace it.

So after a quite long-winded explanation i've got two questions:

    a) does anyone know what i would have to solder? and
    b) are all laptop power supplies the same?

    Thanks very much

Sounds like all you have to do is touch the connection with a hot soldering iron, and maybe add a little solder and it would be done. It may cost you £10 for a cheap 10-15W iron, and £1 for a small spool of solder.

Get an old clock or anything else that is trashed and has a circuit board and play with that first to get the hand of what you are doing. (just melting the pads and adding a little extra)

Yea problem's not that I can't solder, because I can quite well, it;s just I'm not sure how to go about getting into the power supply and actually what to solder.
