Hey guys, I'v sean about five or six different products out there to do this, but I have no idea what I should get. The laptop has a VGA, and the TV has S-video, RCA's, and HDMI. any idea what would be the best bang for my buck?

I was under the impression that most laptops had s-video outputs. I don't know of any products offhand. Maybe you could post links to some that you're considering, and we can help you choose from among them?

high end laptops (~2000$ Can) has (if your not getting rip-ed off, of course) S-Video out. UNLESS it's a Tablet PC or really small laptops (as those really depends)

I'm not saying that a 700$ laptop doesn't have one, but it's unlikely.

S-video was mostly standard on mid-range laptops even 6 years ago. I see them on most mid-range systems now, even at quite a few $700 models. The only systems I've seen them absent from are Tablet PCs and small screen models (12") like GoodBytes said, and the absolute bottom line ones (Celeron processor, 40 gig HD, 512 ram, 4 cell battery, etc).

Sometimes on a laptop you have to press a function key and another key (should have a small pic above the letter or number) that switches between your laptop screen and the TV (normally though used between monitor and laptop screen).

Some TV's will work straight on your AV channel, others need the settings changed for that channel via your remote control to except S-VHS etc.

If you do not have a S-Video connector on your laptop or TV and have Composite (normally yellow connector that will match the shape and size of your red and white (sound)), you can get S-Video to composite Video converters.

    Hope this helps

Wow, some of you have completely missed the point.

The OP has already said that his laptop only has VGA out.
This makes total sense to me as the laptop I am using right now (Celeron proc) only has VGA out.

Unfortunately I can't help you because the only TV I've been outputting to has been an HDTV with VGA input.

I would be interested at looking at some of the products you've found though, as I'll soon be without the beautiful 50" Plasma, once I leave Japan.

VGA can go to RGB scart, but audio would have to be seperate.

And it doesn't always work very well

I don't think its possible for this setup from a vga output. Not without a scan converter anyway.
