    Hi all,
    I recently acquired a free HP G72-B15SA 17.3 (amazon)

However, it turns off without warning and will not turn on without removing the battery and charger and performing a hard reset by holding the power button for 20 seconds.. Reconnecting both and powering back on.

It is not the temperature that is causing this, it has happened on charge and it can go 2-3 days without not doing it then do it 5 times in a day.
This is a nuisance because I plan to take this with me for when I DJ; I cannot have this turn off on me for no apparent reason.

    Any ideas bit-techers?

    Thanks!

Flash the BIOS, check the RAM & drives.

Then see if it does it from a live linux distro so you can discount windows doing something funny

I think i've done all the drivers, flashing the bios doesn't work as it doesn't detect mine.
RAM shows up in full (3gb), HD is in working order but the DVD drive is broken.

    UPDATE:
It died just after I wrote that, no number of power cycles could turn it back on, even tried an old dell laptop charger with 10 extra watts on the output, no joy.

Removed one 1gb ram stick leaving one 2gb stick installed, its booted.
Running diagnostics, the battery test shows no faults.. The RAM test is running now on the 2gb stick, ill swap to the 1gb stick after.

Computer won't post on the 1gb ram stick, fans spin but nothing else.

Sounds like you've sorted it then :thumb: Well, it's either the stick-o-ram or the port.

    I hope it's that 1gb stick!
I'll run it on 2gb for now and see if the problem is still there,

    Thanks saspro, kenco

I'm currently running it without a battery and just the AC charger connected, it's been a few hours now and it hasn't turned off.
What problem would happen to a battery to cause the laptop to cut out even when on charge? (presuming that it is the battery and it's not about to turn off).

Faulty charging circuit or battery causing it to overheat?

Is it an original battery or a cheap Chinese knock off job. In my last place we bought cheap batteries, (ie 3rd party not original) they were the 30-40 quid type from a reputable supplier. We had issues on occasion. If it is a generic 5 quid off eBay type I'd say battery was up the spout. Reading it I was going to suggest running it without the battery connected and see what happened
