I had a play around with my brothers HTC M8 last night. The camera on that thing is insanely good!

Who the hell buys a phone for the camera? It's like buying a house because it has a jolly good shed.

If you need to use a camera THAT much, carry a fricking camera ?

HTC have always been pretty good with the cameras. My previous two phones have both been HTCs, (Desire followed by a One X) and although the Desire wasn't quite up to the old Nokia N95 that it was replacing, they have both been good. I like the HTC user interface as well, it has some nice features without being too different from everything else, something else that I don't like about the Galaxy S5. I was very tempted to go for the M8 when I upgraded but just felt like a change, hence the Xperia Z2.

This. I don't carry a handbag around with me so I like my phone to be able to do as many things as possible.

    Au contraire Blackadder!

The camera is merely one of a number of considerations when buying a high end smartphone. But you'd expect a good one in a >£300 device.

Fair enough, but some people buy a £100 and go "the camera is crap". But even in a £300 smartphone, it's a luxury item. The camera as you said is such a small consideration. I'd normally go for processor speed, graphics (Nvidia Tegra is a big plus for me) and the screen resolution as well as pixel density. I can deal with a smaller res as long as the pixel density was high, so everything is still crisp and sharp. If you really are going to be taking pictures every single day, you may as well carry a good camera instead of complaining about your smartphone's one.

Well, that escalated quickly. I was merely praising the camera in the HTC phone, not saying that I was going to buy it (nor that my brother bought his) based on the camera.

I have never, nor will ever make a decision on which phone to buy based on its camera, and you should realise having read my last few posts in this thread that the phone functionality of a smartphone is most important to me. However, if we're going to have these fancy smartphones costing hundreds of pounds which are capable of so many other tasks like email, Internet, multimedia and so on, and the manufacturers insist on integrating a camera and charging more for the product as a result, they had better put a bloody good one in it that's capable of taking better photos than other phones costing less.

Plus what Lance said, multi use devices save time, hassle and space. Yes, I use my phone camera a lot. It's with me all the time, maybe I can't be bothered to carry a pocket camera around with me all the time so I can take a print quality photo at every spur of the moment opportunity or photo worthy situation which arises. I'm not asking for DSLR quality, but there are phones on the market which cost less than the iPhone 5S and have a better camera.

I bought the Nokia 1020 as my most recent phone and the camera was one of the major selling points to me. I always have my phone on me and I do regular site visits to wetlands that I have to inspect and oversee (Integrated Constructed Wetlands for wastewater treatment) and having a solid camera built into it is damn handy, rather than carrying one around extra. Sure a standalone camera might be slightly better, but the image quality is superb for the purpose! Form absolutely followed function.

This was my reasoning for getting the 1020, It had to be Windows Phone and have a decent camera. It means that I only need to make sure that the phone is charged, which it is every night. I used to carry a Sony nex 5n with me at work for taking photos, and yes the images were better than the 1020 but not by enough to warrant carrying it and it's charger etc over just carrying a phone.

The phone fits in my pocket, the Sony even with a pancake lens didn't and it isn't the sort of thing that you can just chuck in the backpack with all the other stuff, so it needed its own bag.

Yes camera phones aren't the best idea for the majority of people but for those of use that spend a lot of time outside and need a decent picture they're great

Finally, finally finally replaced my knackered Ikea Markus office chair. The Markus was actually pretty decent for the cost (IIRC £115), but was purchased at a time when A) I didn't work from home 3-4 days/week and B) shuddered at the thought of spending any more than £115 on an office chair...

    Herman Miller Sayl
    - Graphite seat pad
    - Black arms, frame and back
    - Height adjustable arms
    - Forward Tilt + Tilt limiter
    - Adjustable depth
    - Polished base

Absolutely loving it, also loving the fact that one of the cheapest in the Herman Miller range seemed to suit me the best - not often that it pans out like that, I expected to immediately fall in lust with the embody (because I'm kind of a big deal, so clearly I need the most expensive one) but found the arms a bit awkwardly places and the back consistently tried to damage my kidneys.

That's all well and good. but, most of the pictures I have in life, are taken with smart phones. Regardless of if you think they look "good", if i'm out with my mates and pictures get taken, we aren't looking for quality that will outshine professional photoshoots - it's capturing memories. I got thousands and thousands of pictures like this, they all make me smile. I have hundreds of pictures I take with my DSLR as well, and these make me smile too - but, I know if I only took pictures on my DSLR, then I would not have thousands of pictures that make me smile and laugh - as I wouldn't of had the facility on me, at that moment, to take the picture.

I can whole heartedly recommend the HTC One M8, It's a fantastic phone, It's Fast ALL the time, It's well built and it feels comfortable in the hand. I do have a complaint though, The on screen keyboard, we don't get on, Some days are fine and i have no issues, another day and it's constant mistakes and errors. Whether it's me or the keyboard i don't know.
Took this photo the other day with my HTC:

Carrying a DSLR with you all day everyday is just not practical

Got a Lumia 1020 for a test and I think I'll keep this if there aren't any surprises during the weekend. The guy is asking 100 €, which doesn't sound too bad?

Yeah I thought so. He said there might be a problem with the battery, but that's exactly why I get to use it over the weekend and find out for myself. Then again, it could as well be just a software problem and a hardware reset could take care of it.

    Either way, at 100 € I think he's got a deal.

All the fake leather bits(headrest and sides) on mine have started cracking and falling apart, constantly finding little bits of black stuff everywhere.

Has been the best computer chair I've ever had though, :D, much better than the £9.99 Argos ones my Dad used to get me, :D
