Mine is sandwiched between a pair of hot and hungry 670s, but the noise doesn't seem to be related to GPU load, so I'm not willing to pass it off as EMI yet, I've sent Asus a support request about it, so I'll see what they come back with.

The DX used that, it would've been easier if the Strix did too, since I wouldn't've had to run another cable!

How much power does a soundcard need? My Sound Blaster ZxR doesn't use any power cables.

@fix-the-spade: please hand in your soapbox at your nearest deposit point.

Most of the time "advice" like this is unwelcome and condescending, and every now and then when you do this - as happened in this case - you make yourself look like an ass.

BTW, do you drink coffee or tea? Caffeine is just as addictive and "harmful" as nicotine. Enjoy chocolate, do you? Or sex, perhaps? Both of those produce a physiological effect and can become an addictive behaviour.

I'll hand in my soapbox now, as this thread is neither the time nor the place to have this tired old discussion.

Bought more styrene stuff (Evergreen, the best) for a project I'm working on. If I wasn't training to be an artist I could build stuff all day every day without any complaints. Pics to follow!

I suggest you read this: https://www.psychologytoday.com/conditions/nicotine

Edit: I should add that I think alcohol is much worse, not in that it is more addictive but, that it's effects are much more destructive.

My partner's ex-husband was an alcoholic, as well as a heavy smoker and had many years of increasingly ill-health, until it killed him at 62. In the meantime he abused his then wife, physically, sexually and mentally whenever he was drunk. Now it has become apparent that my partner's daughter-in-law is an alcoholic and the effect it has had on her life and that of her family, is nothing less than horrible.

Planning a BBQ for later in the week so picked up a couple of these:

Vertical chicken roasters, going to be doing some applewood smoked roast chickens on the Big Green Egg. Done it once before and they were divine, plus chickens are easy and cook fast so perfect for a meetup.

Also picked up some of this fancy Bottega Veneta shower gel.

Girls get to treat themselves to special soaps and whatnot all the time so figured it was my turn. Apparently it's just really nice, I'll have to see.

And I suggest *you* do some reading of your own. All of those really really horrible things which happen to cigarette smokers happen to them because they inhale the byproducts of combustion. That doesn't happen when you vape because nothing combusts.

And yes, nicotine itself is addictive and produces a physiological response. So do other legal drugs like caffeine and alcohol. As I said, chocolate and sex also produce a physiological response and can be addictive, so let's all stop shagging so much and running our mouths so much shall we?

I'm one of those insufferable arsewipes who doesn't smoke, drink, do drugs or even tea or coffee.

I'm boring, I've got a certificiate from the government and everything, it says This man is BORING in big red letters.

I could only be worse if I was vegan.

Asus' Claim is that it's meant to provide "Cleaner" Power than pulling from the motherboard, I suspect it's so that they have a lower chance of the sound card tipping boards over with whatever amperage it needs from the board for the Headphone Amplifier in there. (Which kinda makes sense, with the possibility of these cards going in alongside several VGA cards which pull entirely from the board as well.)

Either way; Neither my DX nor the Strix Soar will work without the power cable connected. The Soar won't even initialise the drivers, while the DX just effectively mutes because of the lack of power to the Amplifier.

Even Vegans drink tea. Not correctly, of course, but they do drink it.

...and I'm the freak?! :p

Three Amazon Dash buttons - purchased on the basis that they're free once you use them for the first time, and I got ones for things I would buy anyway.

My initial thinking was to have some free haxable wifi buttons for stuff and/or things. Having just used them and set them up ordered for the first time, they're actually pretty slick, so might use at least one of them for their intended purpose.

    Anyone else had a try?

See Hackaday.com, where someone rigged a couple of them to ring his or his wife's phones when they go missing.

I was thinking of using two of them to set a hue scene in a couple of different rooms and another to control a wemo switch, but I might just keep using them to order dettol wipes, kleenex boxes and vanish gel... There's a cupboard under the stairs where that stuff usually lives, and being able to just hit the button when it's down to the last one is super lazy, but I super like it.

The fact they're designed for ~1000 presses before they die might make some haxing use cases a little impractical, but I think for my intended uses this would still mean a couple years. The most commonly used room has Harmony setting hue scenes anyway, so the button would be more of an override. The other room is generally only used a couple times per week and the wemo switch would see around 250 on/off cycles per year. Hmm.

I believe you can hack them to order anything on Amazon, not just the "Dash Items", so, yes!

"Buy one button, get infinity buttons free." :)

Then hack them to whatever you want them to buy?

Ah, won't quite work like that unfortunately. You get the money back off the first "Dash" purchase, i.e. within the standard dash product options. Setting it up to do anything else is just a hack.
