My folks got a 21" monitor (as it happens also from Dell) in ~1998, in my head it's still larger than the 40" that's sitting in front of me.

If I didn't know better, I'd have said that 5120x2160 @ 40" is a much better match than the 3840x2160 @ 32" it replaced, but maths tells me it's exactly the same ~140 PPI.

This screen somehow appears to be both higher DPI and more legible without scaling than the last was with the first notch on the slider (whatever that was) - maybe it's the curve? Or just the screen quality in general?

Whatever it is, I'm not complaining. If it was still January I could make a joke about this being my new years resolution. But it isn't, so I won't.

That's what I thought you were going to say, thanks for the clarification. My eyes are ageing, so I'm not sure what to do next.
    27" - check
    Freesync - check
    95 / 144 Hz - check
    IPS - check
    Res -

I've found 32" @ 1440p is the sweet spot for me too. A nice balance between getting more on the screen and, being able to see everything easily without needing to use scaling.

I went from 30" 1600p (Dell) to 32" 2160p (Philips). It's great, but I have been contemplating a monster ultrawide for a while, justifying it to myself that it will increase my productivity :)

Not technically a purchase since it was a birthday gift, but I'm now the owner of a MacBook Air M1 13.3" with 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM. Such a polished slab of hardware.

Just a quick question on ultrawides - how do they handle gaming? Do you game at native res, or does it throw a custom size into the centre of the display? e.g. Gaming at standard 1440p rather than trying to crank out that silly wide.

So for my G9 I think you can plonk a 2K window in the centre for gaming rather than go ultra wide. Not sure if this is the same for others, I won't be able to justify the hardware for cranking it silly wide.

It's an investment in your future, you have to spend money to make money, a man is only as good as his tools, and other miscellaneous generic justifications.

Depends on the game Krikkit. I have a dell U3818dw and some games run well straight away, others mostly run well, with mods for bits that don't, like the witcher 3 and it's cut scenes having black bars at the side, others like Fallout 4, need a bit of tweeking in the ini file. I play a lot of dawn of war 2 and I have had to set a custom res in the ini and scale it in places also and that runs in the centre with black bars. Biggest issue with that game though is losing the damn cursor all the time on that res.

Worst thing at this size is that although ultrawides are often catered for now, it is mostly for 3440x1440 and only more recently are games accommodating the 3840x1600 res, and I much prefer this due to the extra height.

I wouldn't go back though. I love my open world games and anything else just feels wrong now. I have heard others say the same about driving sims too. For anything competitive I wouldn't really want to use it though.

New cushions arrived yesterday. They're a little too thick thanks to my dodgy measuring, but the covers went on ok, just won't zip up. Have made a world of difference to comfort already and as a bonus, the old cushions make much better back rests than the little hollow-fibre cushions the sofas came with.

So I've bought 3mx1.4m of the same material the sofa is covered in and will make new covers for the old cushions. Or should I make new cover for the new cushions?

    This year's trainers.

ZX8000. The last pair of trainers my mum ever bought for me when I was 15. After that it was on me :) My ones were this colourway.

But try finding a set in my size for less than £190.

It's not the wrong color, it's not worn in. I can see the entire Pantone book and worked with my dad painting and reupholstering cars. This will wear to match just fine.

It's not particularly clear on the pic and my phone likes to guess at/remove colour, but it's definitely the wrong one. I got mink silver (which is pretty beige) but should have been shark silver/steel grey/plain silver, depending on who's selling

The PS5 is an impressive console, but the person responsible for its design should get quartered.

    And now we wait.

I like it tbh, that's the thing about design.

It reminds of the discussion back with the original Xbox. Some people loved it, some people hated it, most just accepted it.

Personally, I just dislike the size and in-your-face-ness of the PS5.
