Upgraded my cordless screwdriver as the charge didn't last that long, HOTO PixelDrive from China.

 

Finally got it picked up:



Xeon Silver 4210, nothing too special with 10 cores @ 2.20 GHz, but it should go with the one that I already have in my old work Lenovo P720. I just need to try and get a heatsink for it now without paying silly money - seems daft to spend £30 on a CPU like this and then have to spend £120+ on what is a fairly basic heatsink.

Then I need to get some memory for it too, again nothing special at DDR4 ECC 2400 or 2666, but prices seem to be hanging up there again. In theory I can fit 768GB in there, but i think i shall just start off with 64GB over 4 sticks as that shouldn't cost too much and will allow me to run quad channel.

After all that it is onto the joys of hard drives...

 

Stimara are closing their UK warehouse and doing massive discounts, so picked up another couple of 'Stimagz' sets for me and the other half to complement the ones we already have. This time in 'Forest Green' and 'Cobalt Blue'.

Honestly the best fidget toy/thing I've bought. Very expensive when they're at the full price of £37, but £17 per set, free shipping on orders of two or more, and delivery within a couple of days is an absolute steal.

My OH bought the first-gen plastic ones years ago; they took about 6 weeks to get here, were at least £40-ish, and she had to pay shipping & import costs. This 'series II' version is much more robust and a lot more satisfying. They can even be quiet enough to use in the office without annoying anyone.

I've got a similar problem when it comes to a heatsink & fan for a slightly older LGA2011 E5-2690 v4. I managed to find a Noctua NH-U12DX i4 at a not insane £70 (rainforest link), but yours looks like it'll be a little trickier. Noctua reckons that the following coolers are all compatible via a (free) mounting kit, but they're all around £100-£120

• NH-U14S DX-4677

These discontinued Noctua models are apparently directly made for Socket 3647, but I couldn't find any being sold new - you might get lucky and find one at a decent price on eBay maybe:

Thanks for that list, I shall have a nosey as to what I can find. The problem with the P720 platform is that the two heatsinks that are used are different to each other with the first one being offset as the CPU hides behind the 5.25" drive cage. The second is a more traditional style and the P920 uses two of those. I have a suspicion that the P920 use is the reason for the increased price tag over the offset first heatsink.

I have found a couple at more sensible prices of between £25 and £40, but the shipping on them has been around £75.... Not really helping things. I am going to look at some other LGA 3647 coolers that might work, the problem being that on the side that is facing the first heatsink, there is zero room for a fan to overhang much of the heatsink base at all as the fan from the first one is right there. I can't really swap things around either as the first heatsink fan will not fit on the other side of the fin stack. For what is pretty much an "average" full size case, the P720 does not have a huge amount of room in it for CPUs of this size, especially with 3 RAM slots above and below each processor with fan ducting over them too.

However, having said that, as with just about anything modern(ish) and big business PC/workstation, the whole PC is so well put together, i just wish that it wasn't SO proprietary (don't get me started on the PSU...)

In this case I'm using it as a term to describe anything of generous proportion, for example a busty lunch.
