The most useful feature of the wifi on Samsung washing machines is to use the app (yes really!) to turn off the amazing tune that they play when a washing has finished :D If you know, you know.

(Actually, I don't turn off the tune because I am a maniac)

Our last one was a Samsung Eco Bubble, which sang the song of its people after every wash. So, the only benefit of a pointless feature is it's ability to turn off another pointless feature. Got it. We just closed the kitchen door.

That’s a silly question. It has WiFi so that Samsung can collect usage data that helps them build better products*, and it helps ensure the best possible value from their products**.

*Scrape every single byte of data from the washing machine and every other device it can possibly reach on the network (including your phones and computers) in order to sell it to ad brokers, data miners, AI training, etc.

**Blocking self-repair by pairing components to cloud-connected DRM that is a criminal offence to bypass, and using that cloud-connected DRM as a means to remotely lock you out of functionality in the device you have already bought & paid for unless you sign up to a subscription.

Sorry @Pete J, @b1g-d0g - I’m not passing judgement on your choice of home appliance, or the build quality & reliability of Samsung washing machines. I will happily wear the label of “cynical *******” if that’s how it comes across .

Devices “needing” an account and frivolous connected features are just as much for the vendors benefit as they are the consumer’s.

Far from cynical, anyone thinking that’s not the case is just being naive tbh.

Well… the alternative is that I launch into another tirade about enshittification, “AI”, section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, how much we’re all getting screwed by tech companies on a daily basis, Samsung being part of the DRAM cartel that never went away, etc…

So… I think “cynical *******” is just easier for everyone, tbh

We also have a singing Samsung washing machine, it is not painful as it's in the detached garage.
Mrs A has the smart notifications on, I've stopped mine as they're no use at work!

The wash finished info is handy but I can't see why you aren't able to tell it to respin from the app, that would be genuinely helpful

What information? Oh, it lasted 1247 wash cycles before it shat itself and died. We need to make them more brittle, say 900 cycles, max.

Ours allows you to send it a follow on jobs and set up a programme from the app etc but in their wisdom or for Eco ness, you get about a minute after the machine finishes before it powers down and then you can't even talk to it as it also turns off the wifi :duh:.....these guys have not really thought through the feature set and usability, they need better beta testers.

I guess that is the byproduct of the standby power regulations for these machines but uuurgh!

Spoken like someone who has wisely avoided a career in marketing.

"This account mostly does quick washes at the weekend during term time, none in university holidays; probably a university student, target with 18-30 holidays, loans. This one does a big load wash four days out of every seven, with occasional boil washes; probably a family with a newborn, target with nappies, 'follow-on' milk. This account used to do gentle washes twice a week, then a month of nothing, now the most basic wash once a week; possibly a widower, target with funeral care plans, equity release, and ready meals. This account has 37 other devices on the Wi-Fi network, including a large number identifiable from MAC as being shiny new gadgets; target with adverts for more gadgets including our next washing machine. This account does regular washes except for three weeks every July; presume they're going on holiday and target with travel insurance, flights, and hotels starting early June..."

You have to think like the enemy, y'see...

I find it difficult and unnatural to think like a scumbag. Perhaps I need to try harder.

The bit I struggle with is successfully marketing the addition of wifi as a useful feature to the consumer

50x cheapo "NTAG215" re-writable NFC stickers from the rainforest.
With my 3D printer multi-colour upgrade came the ability to read NFC-equipped filament spools, telling the printer what I'm loading by just holding the spool up to it.

Elegoo offers some filament with tags, but not all my filament comes from them.
A free phone app lets me program material, colour & spool size onto the tags, which I'll attach to some printed filament clips (I'm less likely to throw clips away than empty spools!)

Shield 2019, already have the 2015 & 2017 pro versions, mrs decided to nick the 2017 in the living room for the olden plasma in the dining room.
its much smaller, does not have a harddisk and feels very flimsy and plasticy compared to the previous versions. if any one else is after one scan have this listed as out of stock but they are in actual fact in stock
