I think we bought our previous washing machine for £20 from one of my Wife's former colleagues. Lasted us 10 years.

    Which was nice.

I spent £50 on a Chrysler Alpine, back in my youth. It looked terrible and sounded like it ran on coal but it went to Scotland and back several times without incident.

You can still get cheap bangers that you can run into the ground for a year or two… Especially if you’re happy getting your hands dirty with relatively simple maintenance like oil, brakes, etc…

But they tend to be more like £450 than £45

I may have mentioned this before but, the £45 car was an old Opel Ascona diesel, 1.6L no turbo. It was painfully slow amd a struggle to get up hills, the windscreen was cracked in an MOT failure kind of way, the steering was unassisted, very low geared, heavy and as responsive as a small tiller on a supertanker. On top of that, the brakes only worked because I was still doing a lot of cycling, so had plenty of leg strength. It got me to work and back though, for a few months until I got a much better car. Fortunately. I never needed to do an emergency stop.

I don't know why, but I have this image of David and Arboreal driving about in those tiny Japanese micro sports cars!

Honda has brought a Kei to the UK and widened it a touch, I love it, much want for it

    https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/new/super-n/overview.html

I only need a little city run around this is perfect, if I wasn’t picking up an el cheapo 600e Competizione lease on the weekend I might have gone for this little thing, would leave loads of space on the drive when parked with my daughters up GTi.

10s on boost, fake gears too :D

Up Gti is only 9 something, feels like its a rocketship because it is tiny and uncivilised :D

My Volvo hits 100mph in almost the same time, 60 in mid 4s, you feel nothing because its a big tank, it's like a serenely fast sofa on the move :D numbers aren't everything.

Won’t get one of those for £45

Joking aside, a Kei car would actually be pretty cool, especially some of the convertibles that were about a while back. Problem with JDM cars though is rust…

Buy a second hand BMW i3, and then you have the added excitement of thinking it's going to topple over.

Kei cars are one of my absolute favourite pleasures, been lucky enough to go to Japan and enjoy them, back again in September this year and looking forward to even more!

I'll definitely be tempted to the Super-N at some point, but it also sits with some other EVs I really like - Honda e, Renault 5 and Twingo, Ioniq5 etc, all very different but all fantastic!

Yeah but in this case the kei cost penalty is too high for me.

    Cappuccino anyone?

FYI - Jon at Auto Shenanigans has recently swapped his Saab 9-5 for an Up GTi, and he loves it.
