Impressive, shame I can't get it in my area

Cheap enough even just for 1GB fibre at £25, Plusnet have emailed me saying they're going to charge me £62/month next month unless I sign back up for another contract

 

Ohhhhh 8000, completely pointless for me. But that is a nice price.

Plusnet did the same to me. And I was only on the basic 18Mbps or something. Started at 17, went out of contract and wanted £55 Luckily was moving house, so managed to get Virgin on 900M.
Then they wanted about £80 for not being in contract after 18months.

 

With hyperoptic because it was pre-installed and all they had to do was activate the NTE.

Committed for 24 months back in 2024 via topcashback. Got £100 cashback, six months free, six months half price, 12 months £38 for 1Gb/1Gb unlike the usual which is 100 or 150 up etc.

Come renewal they wanted £62 a month. I did the dance and the best they would do was £44 with annual increases. Despite being £25 to new customers. Obviously.

Oh? What’s this? Social tariff for £20 p/m no raises for 1Gb/1Gb - I just need to qualify (in my case: be a full time carer)? Excellent, that’ll do donkey.

 

I don't really need it either, it was not like I was struggling with 2Gb, but 50 quid locked prices for 2yrs is fine by me, I was coming up for renewal next month, which is after the deal ended though so thought, ah I'll jump on that, makes somethings faster especially big game downloads that I do across many machines though I have a steam cache on the NAS so, I can't really use that as an excuse, but it is OK just to want something

Needs some power to use that speed downloading on Steam, CPU gets hammered but 100Gb down pretty quickly



When is wifi 8 out, this just won't do not sure why upload is always so bad on handhelds Wifi.

I've had my current phone for three years, and I definitely feel like it's time for a change. But I don't really know what option to go with...

I want to get my phone back to being as "minimal" as possible. I don't really want a smartphone any more, but I can't entirely get away from reliance on a couple of apps. Mainly WhatsApp, which is now only supported in Android or iOS. Previously you could use it on KaiOS, the OS used by HMD's "Nokia" dumbphones, but Meta dropped support for everything except Android and iOS.

At the moment the most likely two options are: getting a Pixel and running GrapheneOS; and, getting a 'dumb-ish-phone' like the Qin F21/F22 (small, has physical T9 keyboard, but still runs Android). Neither are great options, because the former means giving money to Google and dealing with potential app compatibility issues like bank apps; and the latter means importing a device which will have at best sketchy ongoing support.

But I'm in no hurry, so I can afford to see if a third 'wildcard' option actually pans out. It's been rumoured that HMD's next "Nokia" flip-phone is running an OS based on Android 13 Go: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Leak-...-is-rumored-to-be-a-smartphone.1369876.0.html. I really like the idea of having a flip-phone again! And no, phones with wibbly bendy screens don't count as 'flip phones'

My last phone was the relatively small iPhone SE 2nd gen, which shared the same housing as the iPhone 5s. From there I went in completely the opposite direction in terms of size, to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. In comparison, it’s absolutely gargantuan:

It’s nice having such a large screen, but even with my massive hands I can’t reach all areas of the screen with one hand, not even if I take the case off.

I don’t think I’ll get such a large phone again. I think I’d get much more benefit by getting a small 8” tablet than such a large phone screen. This phone feels like it’s half-way between a tablet and a phone, but doesn’t really know which way it wants to tilt.

Don’t get me wrong, the screen is absolutely lovely to look at, and the variable refresh rate gives it such a smooth feeling in use. But I’d say the same about the screen in any modern Apple device, no matter what size it is.

 

Ordered some prescription lenses for my Quest 3 from https://www.vr-rock.com/ My glasses fit in there ok but I worry about scratching lenses if there's contact.

 

So it begins! waiting for this puppy to be delivered. Wallet is gonna get battered over the coming months me thinks.

Yes it's IPS I end up with a lot of static UI gumph on screen so it was a no brainer. Same size as the old one but I started getting ghosting on it randomly when working.
