Splinter Cell conviction - good enough to pass the time between now and Deus Ex : HR coming out in August? Or is it a bit of a letdown?

At the very least you're a day too late to get the good deal.

Bought X3-Terran Conflict after a mate at work kept banging on about it, £4.99 worth a shot at least. Can't download it though due to Server overload, so it maybe next Saturday before i can actually play.

    No, it doesn't. :sigh:

There may be a fix though, like there was for the original DiRT.

And today I had to go into my Fallout 3 GOTY shaders folder and modify a file to get that to work too, having had the very unusual "pink screen of death" when the unmodified game failed to load properly and crashed!

It all works fine now though.

The things we do for games, eh?

I'm tempted by X3 but I have a couple of questions for those who have the game:

    1. If I was to buy just one of the X games, which one should I go for and why?
    2. Can you use a gamepad with it?

Terran Conflict is the obvious choice being the newest one. I've only played TC but as I understand it, the previous ones are more or less the same in terms of gameplay. The interface, graphics etc have just been refined between titles.
I'm pretty sure you can use a pad but I don't really see any benefit in doing so. Don't expect intense, fast dogfights. There's a little of that early on but generally combat is easily handled with mouse/kb. You probably want to be giving orders to your other ships at the same time too, so you'll be picking the mouse back up often.

    I really enjoyed it.

Its only good for a single play through and the campaign is not that long.

That one play though is a lot of fun though so if you are getting it cheap then it's worth picking it up.

Also I hear co op campaign is a lot of fun but I never tried that.

Terran Conflict is the one to get if you're just buying one. It has the biggest selection of ships and the largest sector-map/universe as far as I recall; as well as the latest iteration of the game's engine.

You can use a gamepad with it, but I wouldn't recommend it. The game plays best with keyboard & mouse due to its complexity with menus, ship/station commands, AI control (of friendly ships) and the ship controls in general.
Joysticks are also supported, of course; but I haven't tried it that way myself. I think the minute-to-minute gameplay will still require plenty of mouse or keyboard interaction to get things done either way.

Suppose i'm gonna have to get f1 2010 @£6.79, even when f1 2011 does come out it will probably be about £25 at the cheapest.

Loved Dirt 2 but I was never sure whether f1 2010 was good or not.

Portal 2 and Dead space 2 are both very good games if you haven't played them yet.

I wouldn't get duke nuken if it was a pound !

F1 2010 is definitely good. The first time I ever gave it any proper attention I ended up playing it for about 8 straight hours - about 4 of which were probably spent trying to get a clean race in at Monaco. Monaco is such an iconic track and F1 2010 really delivered on giving a sense of speed and enjoyment - loved it. Haven't played it since tho, not cos it's not a great game, cos it is, but I lost my momentum - I'd got to the point where I was racing without the racing line on screen and doing manual gears - if I tried that now it would not be pretty.

The only let down for me in the game is the replays - Codemasters have used exactly the same replay engine as what was in Grid and Dirt 2. It works great in those games but F1 is a slightly different beast and the engine just seemed a bit dated - hoping they'll upgrade it for F1 2011 (have they changed it for Dirt 3, anyone?)

It seems to be a bit like Marmite: personally I love it. I f there was a game which stood for what PCs are about compared to consoles, this would probably be it. You have to invest time to start getting the good stuff.
Hmm, the first question is quite hard! X3 Reunion has more longevity but only because it's MUCH slower paced (actual combat is still quick mind), which actually makes it more rewarding when you manage to fully outfit you M2 Python and proceed to mash up anything in your way. X3 TC takes considerably less time to amass fortune, rep and status, and is a bit more refined graphics wise. Meh, I'd probably go for TC. As for your second question, I use a joystick, so I presume you can use a gamepad. Having said that, Egosoft implemented an optional Freelancer style mouse control which gives you an advantage for aiming your guns.

IMHO, the X3 games are mind boggingly beautiful. There's no rush to do anything, so take the time to admire the vistas (Kingdom's End is particularly awe inspiring) and fly around the stations. Go find an XL solar power plant and skim along the solar arrays, admiring the sheer number of solar cells drawn: then go practice flying around a shipyard at high speed, pulling up at the last second before you smash into a bulkhead.

One last thing: you are not invincible from the get go. Attacking a larger ship in your starting M5 (a scout ship class) WILL result in you dying pretty much instantly - you will want to stick to small cargo and taxi runs first. M4 ships (light fighter class) allow you to start doing light combat missions but only once you get to own an M3 (heavy fighter class), things start to get interesting, though larger ships armed with anti-fighter weapons will still ruin your day.

The US pricing for Dead Space 2 is messed up. the pack (which contains DS1+DS2) costs 20 bucks whereas DS2 is 30 bucks. I would get the pack but i can't gift the extra copy of DS1 which i will receive. Friggin EA. :wallbash:
