It may very well just be me, but can anyone think of a reason why the Ubuntu distro I downloaded - the latest, I might add - runs straight from a CD and still lets me use Windows. I want to physically install Linux to my HDD, but I can't work out a way to do it... I have just learned that it's the Live! CD I've downloaded - is this the correct one to use to install, or do I need to look elsewheres? Joe
Yeah i just played with this on Parrelels, click the install icon on the desktop, that should install it for you!
Right, I think I have issues with my laptop's CD drive, in that it keeps cutting out and doing weird things during the install, and when it actually tries to install, where it copies files to the HDD, it then only gets to 15% before the cd stops working, and then it just hangs there, but oddly enough, you can still move your mouse around. Is there a way in which I can type a command line in to get it to install rather than have to go through the tedious way that Ubuntu do it? Joe
Just leave it be and go do something else. I had the same problem but by just setting the parameters and then going for a cup of coffee everything worked fine. In my experience, trying to do anything while Ubuntu is installing just lags your PC up and eventually crashes it.
It's cause it's Edgy Eft, and its install is 100% GUI, whereas Dapper and earlier are all command line/terminal installs. if it was breezy or dapper, it'd be a lot easier. I'm going to download the Dapper Alternative tomorrow, purely because I've been told it's a lot more forgiving to Linux n00bs. Thanks for your help all, I'll report back tomorrow to let you know how I get on Joe
mebbe... i can still run live, its just when it comes to install time my lappy throws a wetty. well, gonna download dapper alt. tomorrow and burn it and see how that goes. Joe
Some pc's (laptops are most of them) have issues with ACPI and APIC. If possible (I don't know how locked down Ubuntu installer is), give the noapic and/or the noapci as a boot option.
Right, tried noacpi and noapic - this then allowed me to run the installer. but the installer crashed. So now, I am in the process of burning 6.06 alternative to disc to try and install that to my lappy. Again, will let you chaps know how I get on. Joe
Right. When I run the install for Dapper, and Breezy, it unpacks the kernel and generally does its thing, then it loads up this light coloured screen, and then just stops... Any ideas guys? Joe
Right, so far I have tried Ubuntu Breezy, Dapper and Edgy, I have tried DSL - but the disc didn't work. I will download Gentoo and Fedora and give them a go - but I'm thinking along the lines of getting me a new laptop and go from there... Joe
Gentoo? Bit extreme? Edgy has an Alternate Installer CD too. There's nothing wrong with Edgy as far as being a Linux newb goes, it's no worse than Dapper. Dapper has LTS, yes, but it's very unlikely that you'll screw up your install using Synaptic. From my point of view (using a fakeraid array), Dapper would've been more of a PITA!
i am aware of the alternate, and I've downloaded, cut to disc and failed to install it. I am despairing of ever getting a decent OS on there now! I am stuck with Win 2k, which does not have sound support for my lappy, network support for my lappy, proper display support for it (640x480, 16 colours...) So yeah... I am just about to give up for the minute - got a long ol' day tomorrow - gonna have a bash then... Joe
It may be worth visiting the forums at ubuntuforums.org, and echoing any problems there. Whilst I don't doubt that some of the bods here may well be able to solve your issue, you'll have all manner of Ubuntu Gurus watching your threads there. It's worth googling the word 'Ubuntu' along with your laptop's model number (or family). You'll be surprised what you can find, quite often on the Ubuntu site or their forums.
