But to be in a position to wipe one's arse with it (and I don't mean sat on the lavatory), one has to acquire the paper in the first place ergo one cannot be middle class
I'm thinking of the classes in the original, turn-of-the-century sense, when being lower-class meant living in a family of 8 in one room and eating bread and butter for most of your life. There's almost no such thing as a lower class any more economically (and defining the classes intellectually or academically is a losing game, because many of the upper class are uneducated and thick as pigswill).
