I need to design a top down view of an area, however I want to display information in layers.

When viewing the whole design general information is displayed, then as you zoom in on an area get rid of the general text and have more detailed information displayed.

ie. Flower bed -> zoom in -> now displayed names of individual flowers.

I know nothing about how to achieve this, so what software can I use that can do a layered design like this?

    Thanks, LeM :thumb:

Not a clue, but (i hope I explain this right)

Say you have 2 layers first one contains the flowerbed, 2nd one contains the names like you said. Could you not work in an extra layer just below the first one which covers the text when zoomed out, then when you zoom past the flowerbed the text appears as you have moved past the extra layer too?

    Make sense?

edit, Guess this would only work if the text is away from any images as the extra layer would cover any detail under it.

Yeah layers are used in photoshop, depends of how accurate you need to be, if you will be using measurments i'd be using sketchup or AutoCAD, if not and the images are more importand i'd use photoshop or something similar.

from you description, i think you may take a look at google sketchup, it's cool.
from my view, what's your need is like google earth. so sketchup is your solution.
i deal with the 2D structure, so i use Layout 2 in sketchup.

another possible solution, maybe you try flash. but for you need, plus some programming work.
