Welcome to the forums!, hate to be the bringer of bad news but i've seen about 1000000 of these threads before. No-one really has had much luck because all the kit you need to buy is allmost as expensive as a brand new display.

The best guide can be found here:

No Porblem, I wanted to use one, i've got a few old laptops just sitting here.

    The main problems are:
    • All Laptops are different: Laptops screens are all different, they require different power inputs and different controler boards in turn requireing different data inputs.
    • Controllers: They aren't cheap, the ones allready in the laptop are built-on to the motherboard. They need to work with your screen and are often difficult to source and expensive.
    • Power Sources: Often built on to the motherboard in the laptop, difficult to find, different for different displays and expensive

I'm canablalising one of the laptops casings and mounting it inside my case (YY Server Cube), it will b econnected to the network and recive commands for what it has to display via a Visual Basic program using System Monitor and WinSock controlls. It will allso act as a print server, mp3 player and as an LCD driver (for my Matrix Orbital). Pretty technical, but i intend to write a step by step guide on the topic.

Hey, sounds good, ok 1 thing, so the entire motherboard and onboard video i s in your case(except for stuff like hd...cdrom...ect ect?) and that motherboard is hooked up to you your lan card which sends what to display on the screen with that visual program? Now that i think about it your laptop computer must be on too cuz it needs to recieve data...is it on? And if it is on then how did you provide it power?Thnx.

I'm considering taking a crack at this stuff for my seinor design project. I have a couple old LCDs that I need to find datasheets for. I have some ideas on how to interface with one if I can get a digital data stream, and I may be in a better position to do somthing after my DSP course next semester.

The laptop will have everything but the CD Drive, floppy drive, casing and battery. It will recive the data through a LAN port from a client visual basic program running on my main pc, the laptop will be running the server side, diplaying temperature graphs, mp3 data, hdd activity data, news, etc. The laptop will be powered from a molex connector through a modified DC voltage converter card i got from maplin.
