in an lcd how does it display the pixels does it display them all at once or scan them? and how does it display 1 pixel

bit hard to explain but it might help if i provided details about the project basically i want to make a massive (well relatively big) display for lan parties to display what ip each server is on and i was trying to replicate the normal parallel lcd controller and thought why not use a lcd with the display removed and wire up to the contacts the lcd actually connects to. i realise that i will have to boost the current quite a large ammount but 1st i need some info on how it works

    can ne one help ?

It scans them, usually one row at a time.

just looking at an old 20x4 display and trying to work out which pins do what and there 8 thicker tracks at each of the 4 corners of the display. as theres 4 of them it makes me think 1 set for each row and the 8th pin is the gap between rows of characters as the chars are 5x7 pixels

    would u agree with that?

Aren't LCDs adreesed a bit like memory?
I was told of a project one where a guy built a cube of LEDs (full volume, not 6 surfaces) and made it display 3D objects. It might be neat to try and do the same myself sometime
