Hola peeps! I'm new here and thought I might as well get some advice from people that have done this thing before. I was just wondering who makes some of the LCD modules that are described in some of the forums. Basically, Im looking for a 5" screen modules. I looked for the Accele screens, but they are discontinued. Are there any other companies out there that make the 5" screen module, and if so, who? I've done quite a bit of looking, but I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right places. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you are talking about colour LCD video screens. THe place that sold them was Parts Express, but they have sold out... Another source was CPUfx a.k.a. Overclockers Hideout but they have since gone off-line (read: bust?) alltogether.

I managed to get mine secondhand from a mate (thanks, Scopedog!). You could look at eBay, but I think you will have more luck getting one of those clip-on LCD screens you can buy for the Playstation 1. They are 5", and ridiculously cheap (about $69,--). All you have to do is take out the screen!

go to ebay... you can pick em up for a reasonable price...

just search for headrest monitor, headrest LCD, 5" LCD, etc.... youll pick up a lot... and even the ones with buttons on the side... you can take the casing off and remove the control panel easy....

what are you planning to do with it?

Well, basically I want to add some sort of monitoring system for basic systems stats and that sort. I'm thinking I will be able to use the S-VIDEO out of my Radeon 9800 and feed the monitor. I am still very new to the whole lcd mod thing, so my ideas are somewhat limited. My case sits on the floor so, mounting the lcd in the case is somewhat out, but I was thinking of building an aluminum enclosure to replace the nasty plastic thing that will probably surround whatever I purchase. Being that I can actually mount the LCD somewhere else other than the case will allow me to go with a larger format. Maybe a 7" Screen or something. Is anyone doing mods of this nature? If so, what would you suggest? Or better yet, got any examples you could throw at me for ideas?

    Thanks again,

    Tim

well right now im doing a matrix themed case and i bought a 5" legacy car monitor that im installing in the 3.5" bay... if you go to www.e-volvesystems.com you can see some of me n my brothers systems...

if u look at noname thats my bros case which was the first mod we built... and for its time it was really sweet... ill be presenting my latest project soon, and my bro is starting his which u guys should be pretty interested in ;) to say the least...

anywho... you can do great things with lil LCD's... building an ondesk enclosure is a great idea :) it should be able to feed into ur 9800p pretty easily and then powering most of em isnt hard....

you should also check out www.optrex.com if u want more than 5" they sell good TFT's and are pretty well priced... just none the normal mod size like under 5.6"...

anyway good luck with it and keep on modding :dremel:

and if u ever have ne questions feel free to PM me or MSN me....

lol thx... you should talk to bruno (my bro) who is most of the genius... i got a few good mods up my sleeve but he always goes all out... but my next mod shouldnt be too bad...

anywho... the front is unfortunately not motorized... we thought about it though, just never came up with a good way to do it...

though the front LCD mod was first come up by a good friend of mine, SoulsEnd... you can see his at www.soulsend.com

I went to his site, and man it gave me some ideas.... which is a good thing. I just purchased a 5.6" screen off of ebay.... Once I get it I am going to have to do some brain storming.

Absolutely! Not sure when it will get here, but it probably will be some time next week. Only then will I be able to get some hard measurements on the screen and such.

Hi again! A 7" screen will do you nicely; that should fit in two 5.25" bays. If you are building it in a seperate casing, then of course size doesn't matter...

In terms of what to display on it, may I recommend Glint. It looks cool, it is cool! Check it out!

Sweet, thanks for the suggestion! I think Im going to try and motorize the screen, but Im still in the brainstorming stage. Until I get the screen in, I actually am shooting in the dark as far as knowing physical size and what-not.

    Started Modeling....

Well I guess I needed to start somewhere...... I got the ole 3d modeling software out and started modeling my design. I think I have a decent idea, but the tricky thing is, is that it is going to take up two bays to do it. Which is ok.

Question, on a cdrom drive, typically what is the required voltage that the tray motor uses? Is it 12v or is it less? I don't want to hook it up to more than what it will handle and take a chance on smoking the motor. Anyway, here is what I have done so far....

I plan on making the gearbox out of milled aluminum (looks better than the hacked up plastic). There are other pieces that will have to be machined too.

Hopefully this design will accomplish 2 motions.

    1) extend the monitor
    2) rotate the monitor up

    We will see.......

Let me know what you think. I will post more pics when they are rendered.

thats a very interesting design... for your question it is 12v...

looks like your getting yourself into a very interesting mod there! good luck on it and post some more renders of it so we can see more of what you are thinking....

Yep, tis what you did that got the idea going in the ole noggin. :D Im currently still mic-ing the tray and such from the cdrom to get super tight measurements and modeling it in 3d before I send anything out to the machine shop. I sketched up a rough idea of the design so that you can have some sort of idea what I'm trying to accomplish.

Basically what will happen is the the gearbox is basically the same design as what an original cdrom gearbox is. The gears along the side of the cdrom tray will be used to propel new tray that will have the pivot points for the arm that will push the lcd out of the top bay. The new tray will rest on top of angled aluminum and use it as a guide. All of the gearbox assembly will be in the bottom 5 1/4" slot. The top slot will of course hold the lcd. Basically the lcd will have "U" shaped aluminum attached to it, but at the back of the aluminum, will be a roller bearing that will act as a pivot point for the lcd screen. My idea is, is that when the lcd screen hits the end of the bearing track it will pivot on the bearing upwards.

Will this work? I don't know until I either mock it up or build it. Im pretty sure that it will, but until I get the lcd I don't know anything for certain. Anyway, that is what I have so far. Hell, the lcd might not even fit, but I guess it is better to have the idea down, than to just wing it. Im just that way though. Anyway, let me know what you think.

    Got the LCD in..... but....

Well, the LCD finally arrived, and I got power to the lcd from the PSU, but one thing, when I hook up the LCD to the SVIDEO out of my radeon card, nothing appears.... Which I would think that the Radeon would automatically detect the LCD. I am using the SVIDEO TO RCA adapter that came with the card. Is this the correct adapter to use, or is there another one that should be used. I've hooked up the LCD to my xbox, and it displays the xbox video fine. I've already tried setting my video card to multi-monitor mode, and expanded the desktop, which it does fine, but only the analog and digital inputs are shown as monitors in the video card settings. My initial thoughts are that it has to be the adapter. I very well could be wrong. Let me know what your thoughts are.

    Thanks for the help,
