We recently moved and have a large LCD TV. The idiot movers put tape on the screen when they tried to wrap it. The tape is not masking or clear tape but some muddy brown stuff. We have removed all the wrapping and can get the tape off the frame of the TV but are terrified to put anything on the LCD. If we dont fix it though the TV is useless, as well as being large and expensive. I am afraid to put any chemicals on it or Goo Gone, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Why not try heating up the glue and dry wiping it off? Got anymore information about the composition of the adhesive that could help us help you?

    Sounds like parcel tape.
Report it to the moving company and claim it on their insurance.

You can buy lcd cleaning products online, theres some HERE and philips sell a kit aswell. I have no idea how well they actually work or whether they'd be suitable for your needs, but they're worth a look.

Ill second the contact the shipping people though, its their fault let them fix it.

Unless your lucky and the glue is dissolved by a solvent in the cleaning product (highly unlikely) then its one more vote for insurance

goo gone would be fine - it's based on orange oil and will not harm the screen, as long as you use a CLEAN microfibre cloth.

Thanks for the advice. I did not take out additional insurance on the shipping, but then again, the TV was not damaged during shipping. It was damaged by the idiot packer. I actually paid him extra to package the TV's. I will contact the company on Monday and make a claim, although I am sure it is going to be a long uphill fight. They were also listed on the BBB as B+ service, so I could make a stink for them there.

I have been removing the tape from furniture, leather couch, everything all day with Goo gone, I was just really worried about damaging the screen. If I am reading info correctly the screen is actually cover by a piece of protective plastic?

There's no protection on most LCD screens.

Jesus Christ, how do you even pack something by taping material to the object. Even a trained chimp would tape the packaging material to... other packaging material...

that would be bad. goo gone is made from orange peel oil - will not damage the screen. anything ammonia or alcohol based will cause the plastic to haze and/or crack.

However you have to remember that LCD screens have a capillery action and will absorb liquid, the cloth you use can also still scratch the screen.

At the end of the day you've got very little to use but I'd personally say it's a writeoff.

if you are talking about a bare lcd panel, yes. lcd screen on the other hand, does have a protective plastic outer layer. you would have to hit it with a firehose to get any capillary action.

and if you read my first reply carefully, you will note that i specified a CLEAN microfibre cloth.

another note - always apply any cleaning fluids to the cloth, not the subject of the cleaning.

White spirit can cloud plastic, so that's a definite no-no. Isopropyl alcohol would work fine (mixed 50/50 with water) and shouldn't damage the surface of the screen (I use it on my monitors). Isopropyl alcohol does seem to be the nemesis of sticky residue. Failing that, glasses cleaning wipes should do the job.
