I am currently in the design phase of a little project I had an idea for...

I have recently bought an Asus EEE PC 701, I have upgraded it and bought
an external hard drive for it and a SD Card for it.

But I am now thinking it would be quite cool to be able to have a dongle
attached to it where it will read out the subject of new emails and things like
that, when the LCD screen is in power save. Other things like battery life and
CPU load, you know the normal kind of thing.

So my plan is to get a LCD 1 or 2 line Character screen and encapsulate it in
a resin and then make it so that it just plugs into a USB port.

I have never played around with anything like this before but I am an
engineer so was just wandering if any one has any suggestions or done
    something similar.

I am looking at either: Matrix Orbital

    LK202-25-USB-FB
    or
    GLK19264-7T-1U-USB-WB

Then modding the backboard and taking off all the connectors and
just leaving the solder connectors for the usb cable to be soldered
    directly to the board.

Anyways still in the design stage so give me some feed back please...
