im looking at building a display above my dj setup like this :

however, i want to source the parts from the uk...

major parts needed (not specifying cable, solder etc that I can get easily)
    - rgb led strip dmx controllable.
    - dmx controller (i call it a decoder, as it connects to the led strip and converts dmx to the rgb led strip)
    - usb dmx controller (creates dmx using hardware from software on a computer)

possibly need power supplies... easily sorted though.

i dont think that these led strips are the type that have a microchip with each led (so each led works as a pixel, and is independently controllable using dmx)

    unless you know differently?

what id need is dmx controller connected to the led strip with power and a usb dmx controller to send the data to run it.

basically its pixel tape / digital tape

Not sure sorry, I'm was assuming the dmx controller would send a signal to a certain led with a colour & on/off code.

The ones we have can change colour and flash/fade in patterns.

each led has a chip in their own circuit of the strip.

do yours have microchips along them?

There are different types of LED strip, the standard ones that just light up when they receive power (which is what I think keir has) and those that accept a control signal (most likely serial connection) and can be controlled individually to create patterns like the video.

I'm sure it's cost a lot less just making it.

perhaps it will be cheaper to DIY.

still looking for the supplies, which is the problem.

ok... so I can't get the strips in the UK

I've thought a more practical solution is to get another monitor, and mount it above my existing monitor

I have a redundant computer (media computer that is no longer used downstairs) so I can use the graphics card from it to rum the second monitor.

I will put visuals on the top monitor when DJ'ing live

and also use it for putting vst (virtual music instruments) interfaces on, freeing the bottom monitor to just show the main program for music producing. (Ableton Live)

I have got a couple of the single monitor desk clamps, so I know that this should do the job:

just need to find which monitor to go for?

    I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW 22inch

    what would go with it?

Should I start a new thread for monitor?
