"I am doing this example with a 80 conductor cable. If you use a 40 conductor cable Pin 39 is simply the second to last wire (NOT on red side) Since and 80 Conductor cable has a ground wire paired with each signal wire. So Pin 39 is the THIRD TO LAST WIRE on MOST IDE cables (As some cables are different check your cable first with an ohm or continuity meter first)" thats a quote from the second hdd activity led mod you can do but how do i tell wether or not i have a 80 or a 40 conductor cable? i'm using rounded cables also does it matter how i solder in my led + - or is any way okay for this partickular mod? thanks!
Rounded cable is almost guaranteed to be 80-pin. Besides counting them (gah), you can compare it to a floppy cable. If the individual wires look about the same size, it's a 40-pin, otherwise it's 80. Oh, and LED - goes to IDE cable.
not working for me hmmm i have it wired up right does it matter that the ide cable goes from the master hdd to a slave cdrw and then to the mobo? does this mod only work when you have a ide going only from the mobo to a hdd? also i'm wireing the led into the third to last wire in the last section of the cale inbetween the slave and master connecters? does it mater which way the led gets solderd in as far as positive and negitive are concerned? thanks (gah)
okay i just ran hooked it up like in the pic and tested it and it works great but the led never goes completely out but it does get brighter and stuff when the drive is loading and at a startup so i know it works but i would like it to go completely out when the hdd is not active?
(gah) Try adding a diode or two in series with the LED. This should increase the voltage before the LED lights up, or use a bigger resistor possibly?
