Well, at least I know who here is of questionable sainity :)
The 'ideality factor' is listed as the emission coefficent in my text. Pretty funny how texts disagree :)
The important part of the exquation though, is that all the variables appear the exponent on e. Thus, the log nature of the IV graph. For all the 'less educated' the important thing is that it doesn't take much of a change in voltage to cause a pretty big change in the current. Current=killer :)

I was also recently directed to an LED artical on Dan's Data (the URL escapes me right now), but it was interesting to read the discussion on temperature and how it affects current. A this point, I realise that this is the holiday season, and I should head out for a few cold ones and try not to think :)

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. I'm very impressed with the scope of this site. I'm no longer satisfied with my plin old beige case with the onlu mods being a couple extra fan holes and SB live! optical out hack.

yeah, they just tell you kT/Q is around 25 meV at room temp, and the temp dependence "disappears" I always thought that was odd myself.

If you were referring to cheese being of questionable sanity, you're spot on, (just keep in mind he's a Ph.D. candidate in physics at Oxford).

Pahh I don't think my sanity is questionable at all, everyone knows I don't have any :)

...and I'm at Cambridge now (did my master's at Ox), doing quantum optics so I'm allowed to forget some of my semiconductor physics, but not a lot ;)

    LOL guys.
Anyone who has taken enough math to get the quirky math jokes is definatly of questionable sainity :) As for a Ph.D. in physics, I don't think I have the disipline for that myself. I'll just be happy one I have my B.S. in EE.
But now we are way off topic :) Anyone try putting either a large, charged cap or coil across an LED and see if it explodes?

I haven't tried using a cap. I suspect you would need a big one as it is really the ammount of energy the poor littled is trying to cope with that kills it.

That sounds right. I guess I'm just odd for having some very large caps lying around. So I guess I'll volunteer, but without a vide camera, it won't be as much fun :( BTW, I'm now staring at a 45000 microFarad cap rated for 30 volts muhahahaha!
