I just got home. I called in Tesco that was a mistake, the air con was soo nice, I forced the office to come to the warehouse if they wanted things today they have air con so if I have to suffer so do they!! Opposite where I work they are building new houses and I felt for them today in the cabs of the machinery, bring back snow!!
Not sure how we survived last night and I wish I was being dramatic. Three of five cats were panting which is never a good sign. But I managed to get them some cooler air by swapping round the fans a bit. And my partner who is disabled has a migraine, cold shivers etc. I’m pretty sure it’s heat exhaustion, waiting for it to be a bit more of a human time of day to see what next. I’m actually significantly worried about today as it’s supposed to get 5c hotter at the peak here. Plans include getting some of the unused moving boxes from our storage unit and double layering it up over the windows; it’s all strong double-wall stuff so hoping it will block a lot of heat, plenty of cold water. Maybe one of those rigid plastic paddling pools too with as much cold water to aid evaporation cooling.
I'm suffering in the heat - I'm Welsh, so I'm rust-proof not sun-protected. My office doesn't have aircon - although other meeting rooms do, so I'm decamping to one of them today (the office was built by the local council, who decided in their wisdom that staff areas didn't deserve aircon, only the public meeting room spaces got it...) Also, SSRIs don't play well with heat either
My OAP parents said that they will be sleeping downstairs in the living room which can have both sides open. Their bedroom was 31c when I called late afternoon and sun was still shining on that outside wall.
My cunning plan for this evening involves a ticket for Supergirl at my local, air-conditioned IMAX cinema and a large tub of ice cream.
I do feel sorry for those in flats etc but I'm sitting mostly comfortably: Day time: Almost cold sat in the air-con work office Evening time: House has got to about 26 C as it is a well insulated bungalow with good eve overhangs on the south facing windows (plus I close the curtains). As soon as the outside temp drops below the inside temp all the windows go open and I leave as many open overnight as I dare. Though it was so hot last night the house only cooled back down to 24 in the middle. (1st day it was more like 20 but there is heat soak going on). Morning time: Pleasantly cool and open all the windows to fill the house with cool air before shutting it up tight, closing curtains etc for the day.
We do much the same to try and control the heat in our little bungalow, except our cat is not allowed out at night*, which limits overnight window opening. When we opened up this morning it felt pleasantly cool, even though the heating thermostat claimed it was 28C… *There have been thefts of pedigree cats in neighbouring villages and, we don’t want him releasing live mice in the bedroom at night!
Well, considering due to my health conditions the idea temps and humidity should be 21C/>50% I am slowly realising I should have moved to Svaldbard years ago Can't get AC installed either, as landlord refusing it, let alone local councils requesting AC to be removed due to net zero policies (AC's are just heat-pumps in reverse but they are OK) I'll be suffering for at least the next week, more so yesterday and today though, roll on the winter
Hot as balls down on the island. The store got up to 35 degrees and we went home. It was 27 degrees outside at 7.45 this morning and it's just frikkin miserable now. My staff are already petitioning me to send them home.
I went crazy with a roll of tin foil and a roll of packing tape and it’s been twilight in our lounge all day. Has kept temps down though, and my partner became lucid thankfully. Dragged the mattress down on Sunday; just hope I can drag it back up solo next Sunday. Upstairs thermostat was showing 37.5 in the west-facing bedroom and 34.5 in the east-facing. If I can keep downstairs under 32c we might make it. Trying to see if OT will do air con as well as the stairlift and wetroom, they said they might be able to, but they’re so busy that it’s hard to pin them down for answers.
I've seen the stories but I can't get my head around this one. Sure it could increase the load on the grid during hottest time of the day, but what if the house doesn't pull from the grid in the first place? For example, currently AC only draws 500w to keep 25c for most of my house. All of which comes from roof top solar with excess that goes into my battery which will be used to continue powering AC units into the night. So that is there to worry vs net zero goals?
On Octopus Agile at the electric price hit 80p kW/h last night which normally only happens in the depths of winter on cold still days. Apparently it is because the whole of europe is in a heatwave so electric demand is very high across europe with minimal wind power output right now. This places stress on our electricity prices despite there being minimal Air-con peak power demands for the UK. I have solar but no AC or battery. I am considering going air-to-air ASHP + MVHR with cooling capability (i.e. HVAC) as I have above access to 90% of my room ceilings and means I can remove the central heating and avoid cooking in the summer.

Seems our heating thermostat can’t cope beyond 30C. Late morning it reached 30C, the rest of the day it has just told us that the temperature is “high”…
I should have stayed in Dublin, so toasty back home today, popped our thermometer outside in the shade, it was registering 36, in the house it is now 30c. When the sun came around that sensor quicky went upto 43C, not something you really want to be out working in, I took this week off to work on my garden, been a compete waste of time, no chance I get anything done in these temps as they are high even in the morning. Noticed that in the house we have high humidity, probably a byproduct of only being able to open a small subset of windows, is lowering that with a dehumidifier going to make it more comfortable in the house, or a mistake as that is no doubt that is going to kick some more heat in side?
Camden Council, their response based on policies from Heir Khan "The Council’s approach follows the London Plan, which prioritises passive cooling and discourages widespread use of conventional air conditioning due to enrgy use and the urban heat island effect."
Surely one would just say "but it's an a2a heat pump and it does our heating too so unless you wanna replace my heating system, nob off". The government is doing grants for a2a heating & cooling systems from next year, so local councils are gonna have to **** themselves backwards if they wanna stick to this ****.
got 3 hours sleep last night, the humidity this morning is absolutely barbaric; combine that with the heat upstairs in my place and I feel like I'm drowning. i sure hope it breaks as predicted tomorrow i really do.
