I played 2 skirmishes of CnC3. One ended in a BSOD after about 15 minutes. Restarted, tried again, lasted about 5 minutes.

So I ran Orthos. It went for..well...have a look.

    What should I try?

EDIT: I just tried it again. It only lasted 28 seconds that time. Core Temp was reporting temps in the low 50s under max load. That's with almost 1ghz of OC'ing on my CPU. It's been fine up until now. I'm using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Should I try reseating the cooler and applying new thermal compound?

Double edit: I just downclocked it back to stock and with my Freezer 7 Pro spinning at 2500RPM my 2.13ghz C2D was hitting 53c! Holy macaroni! I think I should reseat the cooler and apply new thermal paste.

I am REALLY looking forward to screwing around with Intel's AWESOME LGA775 bracket system! /sarcasm

oh look, orthos just failed again. This isn't looking good :duh:

Sounds like you may have a case for RMA. But when they get it back they may believe you OC'd and refuse to exchange.

Way too late to RMA, unfortunately.

Forgot you guys have a 30 day warranty, my bad. We get a full 12 month on electrical goods out here.

Have you tried underclocking it may help a bit, other then that, disable the first core. It won't work anywhere near as good as it should do but it will help.

I know it can be done with the asus P5W boards, not sure on the Abit though, you will need a BIOS update.

I'm using the latest BIOS. I don't know if I can disable a core. Abit boards (especially the AB9 Pro, kinda suck now). Now that I think about it, these problems didn't occur until after I updated the BIOS. Probably just a coincidence. Anyhoot, I'm using it at stock right now. I will probably try to refit the cooler and put new paste on it. Hopefully that helps.

Thats quite sad, i thought such a modern cpu would last much longer, tho personally i think one of the cores is dead. TBH with the prices of the cpu's now i think you can pick up a bargain.

Well, I went out and bought new "Zalman Super Thermal Grease!!!" for the mind bending price of $15 dollars at CompUSA. It's a nice set-up though. It comes in a glass bottle with a brush applicator.

Anyways, I took apart my AC Freezer 7 Pro and cleaned it out, cleared all the dust, took care of it. Turns out one of the super awesome, ingenious and absolutely flawless intel bracket design (which the AC uses) is not quite that good, after all. WHODA THUNK IT? One of the little plastic clips broke and one side of the cooler was loose and not making full contact with the CPU. Well I happened to have my stock intel cooler lying around so I took one of the clips off of that and replaced the broken one on my AC.

It STILL doesn't feel like its making good contact, though. I'm pretty sure I have them in there as good as the crappy design permits. Can't really tell, if I turn the clips with a screw driver in either direction they just pop out, so I pressed them in, listened for the click and gave it the ol wobble test. It didn't feel wobbly, so I'm guessing it's as good as its gonna get.

Which is confirmed by it hitting 50c at stock speeds with the fan going at 2500RPM. The good news is I've been running Orthos for a while now and it hasn't failed. SO I think I solved the instability issue.

But wait, look what we have on the front page today :) *goes and looks for a place to buy Zalman CPNS 9700* It looks like it has a nice bracket set-up to boot. While I was at it I took apart my Zalman VF900 VGA cooler, cleaned it out, applied the Zalman grease and put it all back together and the VGA is staying at a cool 33c, so I know I'm doing something right.

    Whoah, that's a seriously chilly 7900GT, I had a VF900 on one and only got 41'C temps...

S775 mounting seems ridiculously fiddly, the stock cooler by itself is a complete ballache, and the massive baggie of mounting hardware that came with this Storm G5 makes me shudder...

Well at idle it's hanging around the high 30s low 40s now. A little over 2 hours of Orthos+CnC3 demo and it didn't screw up at all. Under that load it stays at a solid 50c. The real test is gonna be when I 4v4 SupCom on a huge map with Fog of War turned off. That should be interesting. I just hope I didn't cause any long term damage to my CPU.

When you say the Abit boards suck now, what do you mean?
