Case Mod - In Progress Lian Li 686B (2x343B cubes)

Hey Guys

starting my project to make the Ultimate Gaming\lanning\File server box.

i plan to combine 2x Lian Li 343B Cases on top of each other to make maxium Hard drive storage capability, make the case lannabl (bigger wheels and big handles) install new raid card (24port), 16 new drives, Add DVDRW's (finally) and look into doing a possible spray job to make it look more attractive

27x 1TB hard drives (19xsamsung 8xwds)
1x 500GB (os)
highpoint 2340 and 2320
HP brodacom pci-e dual nic
MSI 280GTX
2x Silverstone 1000w OP range (big and annoying PSU's)
custom Cube case

Lanable with 28 harddrives and 2 PSU´s? You must be kidding .

 

The quickest way that comes to mind is build some sort of pattern inside with all those disks, as opposed to stacking them all up in a big pile. As long as you keep 90degree angles disks can be placed any way you like, so you could build quite a nice maze with good lighting effects and 16 disks.

Simple example: placing them in 4 sets of 4 you could do it like this:

Light that whole thing from a central sharp point below with some reflective surfaces here and there, and you will find more people staring at your sidewwindow then at your screen

Very nice. I'll be keeping my eye on this one. Being in the middle of a 343b case mod myself, I can honestly say it truly is not big enough. The case seems so giant online in pics but in real life with components in place, it's deceivingly small.

Seems like a bit of a waste of space to me. I mean it'll look awesome, but how many hdds are gonna go into it? 60 max if you're looking for hotswap. You could almost get that in a sixth of the space with a Thumper.

Well it looks loke an insane project and I really hope something good, comes out of this. Remember: "Bigger is better". I am not in to that "Less is more" crap...

 

i am going to build it to fit 46 drives to start (10x 4in3 coolermaster's and 2x 3in2 lian li) but it will be able to go to 66 drives with 5in3 cages/rear mounted lian li brackets. but to get to those sort of numbers i need a different motherboard to what i currently have and anther raid card.

i hope within the next month it will have 28x 1TB drives i currently have and 16x additional 1TB drives. any upgrades after this will come at a considerable leap in cost

And yes 28 drives in a machine is lannable, i have taken my little beast to about 14 lans or more (lost count) sure it takes 2 people to carry it and you have to be selective what automobile you fit it in. i will put some pics up of the old case when i can find one :/
