    Hi all! :)

I'm modding my chieftec case, It will be pearly white painted and I'm cutting some flames on the side. It has watercooling inside too, but this should not be importart for my question :)

Here we are....I would want obtain a flame effect using red/yellow lights. I dont want see anything inside the case, but flames only. Dont suggest me to paint flames, this will would not be "pro" ;)

An aluminium's paper (in Italy we call it "domopack") between two plexy panel, off course lighted, could be a good solution? I'm a newbie of lighting, help me ;)

Thank you very much and sorry for my terrible english! :wallbash:

Now some photo of my chieftec right panel. :dremel: :dremel:

what you could to is to engrave the flames in two sheets ofplexi... one lighted red and one lighted yellow. just engrave the flames so the colors overlap a bit. the deeper you engrave, the stronger it will light up.

Each color has a different sheet of plexy...you're right, today I will buy some sheets and leds, so I can try this.

In your opinion can I obtain something beautiful following this way?

    Thank you smilodon.

I've forget to ask how many leds I will need ? One led each 10cm steps is too much? Is there a min/max thickness for plexy? Is 4mm right for me?

4mm should work ok. You could even use 3 or 2mm. If you use thick plexi, you can drill holes to put the LEDs in though.
How many LEDs you need depends on their MCD rating. Maybe one or two LEDs per sheet of plexi is enough actually.

I would suggest you buy a little more plexi and LEDS that you think you'll need.

I vould suggest 5CM spacing for the LEDS or ledd. It all depends a bit on the light angle, and MCD rating (as bard pointed out) and how deep yu engrave in the plexi.

here is an example on something i made. I have about 5cm spacing and pretty wide angle on the LEDs. even then the light tend to get a bit uneven. I don't know the MCD rating on the LEDs, though, but i vould guess abut 200 per led. This gives a nice background glow in a dim room.

edit: those engraved lines are dne with a 1,6mm engraving bit (or was that 1.8?). Its about 1-2mm deep. (made on a 5mm sheet of plexi)

After some try, I understood that with leds I can not obtain what I want.

Here a pic of my window, lighted with christmas lights :p through 2mm plexy sheet lapped with P1200.... The flame in the middle (yellow/orange) are exactly what I want.

I think that looks awsome, more of mystical fires or northen lights as opposed to fire, but cool none the less :thumb: :)

Thank you guys, now I'm searching for some translucent adhesive of variuous colors for using in place of "lapped" plexy. May be this help me to diffuse lightning.

whats?? :eyebrow: :worried: Sorry I dont understand this....

i think i know what u want! do a little bit of more engraving to the plexi. Outline the flames on the plexi with an etchin tool or engraving, and add some fading blue, purple, and yellow leds (butane flames :) ) to the edge as they fade it will look like he flame is changin colors or movin around a bit. and only the edges will atain this look.
