I am looking for a minimal Linux distro that I can install Flash on so basically an old laptop can be used as a web browser and view Youtube, iPlayer etc. Ubuntu is great but too fully-featured for my needs. I tried the smallest distro of Debian but I don't know how to install Flash - I downloaded the .deb file but I don't know how to install it. I googled it, but didn't find a simple answer - way beyond my limited Linux knowledge. Help! Thanks
If you install Debian with the GNome front end you should have everything you need, including the browser and a basic email client.
Most distros don't ship with Flash installed by default as it's third-party code and not strictly open source. They do usually make it easy to install however. How old is the laptop you're using? What sort of specs are we looking at here? Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
IBM Thinkpad, about 6-7 years old. I've had Ubuntu on it before and it ran OK if a little sluggish but it just wasn't what I needed. It's basically going to sit in the bedroom to be used as a browser/youtube/iPlayer machine, so I don't need anything other than that. Installing Flash on Ubuntu was easy but for whatever reason I'm having problems with Debian. I'm reinstalling Debian now (off a USB drive). I had LXDE before, will try GNome though this time.
Let us know how you get on. Will try to help you install Flash if needed. Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
So I chose graphical user interface during the install and it looks like it's KDE? The browser is Konqueror. Audio drivers are installed which is an improvement over the last install. When I go to the Adobe website it's giving me a choice to download YUM, tar.gz or rpm I wouldn't know what to do with any of them Thanks for the help
