dont know about desktop, but with mandrake 10.0 i finally got my linksys wpc11 v.4 working using the ndiswrapper and insmod'ing the windows xp driver - all i had to do was force hotplug, pcmcia, and ndiswrapper. I'm not sure what you'd have to do for a usb or pci card ....
