I have one, been using it for about 2 years now without any problems. Has blocked many attacks and the firmware is extremely easy to update. 5 thumbs up!
Youll like that router, its an excellent solution. I had one for at least three years. I just had to replace it though, as a firmware upgrade ruined it. It still worked, as a router and switch, but I could no longer forward any ports. After talking with Linksys and downgrading the firmware, it was still not working. Sooo, its sits under the new router (the exact same model) and will act as additional switch ports when I need them. Don't take this post as talking bad about the router, this is just one instance, the only instance that it gave me problems. Linksys is an excellent company just for the fact that I can call them anytime 24/7 years after the warranty ran out and get solid technical support from them.
Which firmware rev did you use? I just upgraded my firmware about a week ago with the latest and have no problems with it.
Ahh, this was a while ago, at least a month. I had the router for at least three years and hadn't upgraded the firmware once, so I finally decided to upgrade to the newest version. There really wasn't a reason too, I just wanted to see the changes. Now I wish I hadn't. The Linksys tech support hadn't heard of their firmware screwing up like that before, but they couldn't fix it. It accepted all of my port settings, but no traffic would flow through them. HTTP requests, file shares, port triggers, nothing would work. Put the exact same settings into the new router and they worked perfectly. <shrug> Oh well, now I have more ports for LANs.
The only firmware version I have is the current one off of Linksys which is dated 6/24/03 (ver 1.45.7) and can still be d-loaded from Linksys.
No noise from mine. Although I have contemplated modding a fan into it with some heatsinks to cool it off. Anyway, mine are silent.
mines got like a high pitch noise when its idle and then when their is some activity it starts to sound more like a hard drive
I would consider exchanging it. Sounds like that from a device that has no moving mechanical parts cannot be good.
where would you put them? i think i will, im gona phone linksys directly and see what they say about it.
is anyone using this on Blueyonder? i cant get mind to work but maybe its to do with the odd noise? (sounds liek a power blockage or sumit, when its first on its quiet then gets louder) also which mac address do i need to register? as on the bottom of the router i have one and then when i goto the admin screen i have two :-\ the same on as on the bottom of the router called (LAN) and another one called (WAN) both are different.
There are various chips inside that get very hot. A heatsink or two with a fan mounted to a duct of some sort would help it out a bit. The WAN MAC is the only one that will be seen by Blueyonder. I am unfamiliar with your ISP. For mine, absolutely nothing was needed to connect to the net, didnt even need to login to the admin panel. Most services automatically connect and use a DHCP. You shouldn't have to do anything with MAC addresses for it to work, unless Blueyonder is different. It may very well be a problem with the router, as it should not be making any noises.
yeah blueyonder use MAC address's i managed to get the router working but i cant put up with the constand noise from it...when its first powered on its nice and quiet then the longer its on the louder it gets. RAM takes 10 days too
