what settings do i need to have so that I can send fiiles or make direct connections with another firewall user?

I am currently using a 4 port cable/dsl router by linksys.

any input would be helpful, thanks and have a good day...

    ok.

    specs: linksys router, windows xp.

    example:
using aim/icq/msn to send files to another router user. a msg would pop up saying " both users are behind firewalls, and connection cannot be made"

    what i want to do:
be able to send files to other users who are behind firewalls

what linksys router is it?? whats the number on the actual router?

why dont you use windows networking to transfer the files...if they are on the same router share the hard drives and then browse through network neighbourhood....

sounds like the pre installed firewall to me though...the one that comes with xp and is a load of ****e....

the machine you need to open up to the net, get it's IP addy (command prompt> IPCONFIG) and go into the router setup, advanced tab, and DMZ host, put that ip in the DMZ host field..

Are you running a software firewall too, because I dont have any problem accessing others behind firewalls from behind my BEFSR41 with zonealarm 3.0 up and running..

It should be noted you will not be protected by the firewall now.

you might want to enable port forwarding instead, and tell it you want msn to use a random port, you may also need to tell it that
port 110 is used for pop3 and 25 for smtp, also if you plan on ftp'ing 21/22 for that only allow outward traffic on those ports as there are known ports people will look at those first.

Also invest in a software firewall ie nortons or zone alarm as that will keep updated with the latest trojan's as personally i dont think a hardware firewall is good enough on its own
