This is actually a friend of mines router problem.

He has a WRT54g ver 5 router. It has been working fine for about six months. Today when he used the wireless for about two minutes the router stops working completely. Although if you just use a ethernet connection it works fine. It has all the latest firmware updztes as well. So he kept using the wireless even though he had to keep rebooting it to get it to work. Then it just stopped working all togehter. He then flashed the firmware to get it to work again and now it works but is still doing the same thing.

Any way to fix this or know what has happened?

Perhaps someone has a Pre-N wifi setup nearby. They're known to cause problems with other protocol wifi setups, iirc.

Bit of a long shot, but if he's willing to void the warranty, open it up and see how the capacitors look: there's a chance they've blown / leaked.

new firmware time!!! :D From a third party :p Tomato perhaps?

Although another cause for wireless crashes on linksys routers is the number of open connections. The default length of time for these to be left open is 5 days (!!!!) so if youve got P2P activity, turn off the software and then restart the router. see if you have connectivity and then start the program back up again. Tell us the results :)

Also did he follow the proper procedure for Flashing as a lack of wireless can be caused by a small corruption of the firmware. Nothing major to worry about as youve actually flashed the firmware successfuly (the thing turns on).

    Try the following,

Reset the router to default settings (Hold reset button for 30 seconds),
Upload the firmware using the web page interface and wait till its succsessful and has rebooted itself.
Reset router AGAIN using the rest button (again hold for 30 seconds).

Make sure that you dont hit the reset button for the second time untill yove flashed the router correctly

EDIT:: no third party firmware for you my friend :wallbash: if youve got a v5.0
2 meg flash and 8meg (!!) RAM = no extra fun. but i still think you need to perfrom a proper re-flash

Remember to flash firmware over ethernet, not wireless.

It's a good router, just shite firmware.

I'd recommend you flash it with DD-WRT v23.

    /agree'd

open firmwares like dd-wrt and openwrt are far better than that linksys junk they expect you to use.

open firmware will turn linksys crap into a great router with many extra features not provided in you linksys firmware.

    :p

I'd be agreeing with you that they aren't the best if it wasn't for the 3rd party firmware, though I've had the most problems with Belkin routers and least problems with a cheap Safecom routers
