Well, I figure I'm going to be a good friend and let my buddy borrow rh7.3 while I try out rh9...
I turn out to dislike rh9 (still picking up 7.3... didn't need to upgrade)...

So I get my laptop working again... I need to format it, why not install linux? Crap, I don't have rh7.3... crap, I don't have any more CDs... Alright alright, I'll install rh9... what? CD2 is destroyed? Crap. Crap, I can't find Gentoo... Ah well, I'll try my luck with a debian install... What? The checksum fails? Crap. *rummages about* Ah! Here it is! WHAT!? This checksum fails too!? CRAP!

So I have to settle for the only thing that will "install"... mandrake 8.2 :grr:

    5 OSs
    1 AWOL
    3 Destroyed
    1 Rubbish
Total: Either linux or my CDs hate me.
    :sigh:

Edit: Any idea why it's making run the network config (in harddrake) every time I boot up? Like it doesn't feel the need to remember the fact that the only thing I use it for is to get online...

Make sure you told Mandick to save your settings.

The option should be in neat somewhere.

How do I get to neat again? I've been using "draknet" in "harddrake" and it's been working, just not remembering... :blah:

    Grab a console, type neat.

You'll need a GUI for it to work, if you don't have access to one, your going to have to stick to ifconfig.

    bash: neat: command not found
    :(

It's stupid. It only takes a couple minutes (even on this slow pos), but I don't see why I should have to go into harddrake every time I boot...
    Crap. :brrr:

Edit: Is there any way to install GTK without freetype? I can't seem to get the make install to work properly (tells me "error 2" but doens't explain what that error is and I'm too lazy to look for logs) I'd really like to get xmms installed but it whines about GTK, which whines about glib, pango, ect, which whine about fontconfig, which whines about freetype... So is there a way around this??

xmms should be on by default, if not, go to the mandpack or whatever the hell the rpm manager is called and search for xmms, then choose all the options and it should install everything you need

there's an Add/remove programs, but there's no server info so it can't connect to find rpms to d/l and install...

No go. The mandrake software manager won't let me define any sources (tells me there's an error, but doesn't say what or why) and if I try going straight to the rpm on the CD it either A) tells me the package is already installed (gaim and freetype, neither of which are installed, at least not properly) or it's a wrong filetype :grr:

Neither CD has a package for xmms though...

    Try upgrading to mandrake 9.1
I have had it running on my main rig(see sig), a k6-350 with 64 megs of ram, a p166 with 32 megs of ram. All worked fine. everything.
I even have xmms installed no prob, not a darn thing I hate about it.
http://www.linuxiso.org has a bunch of distros and checksums for ya. Average spped for me downloadin off them was over 20k/s though.

That's not the real reason not to upgrade.

What about just re-installing teh entire damned thing again, jsut install every goddamn non server package it has.

Or go to your friend's house, beat him senseless and take your 7.3 CDs back. or go to the store and buy a ten pack.

Your fighting with Mandrake again, you know what happened last time. Well now it's happening again.

First of all, after rummaging through the CDs I don't see any sign of xmms.
Second, my friend is supposed to come by tonight with my 7.3 CDs. If he doesn't I will proceed to beat him senseless.
Third, I'm too poor to buy CDs.

And yes, I know better than to try with mandrake, but alas that was all I had :sigh:

Come look at my CDs! Out of all the RPMs there's no xmms. xine, wine, every kind of useless networking monitor program I could never need, but no xmms.
    **** you mandrake. :grr:
